4 Sticks of Memory

4 Sticks of Memory
« on: August 07, 2010, 12:17:46 am »
Using Corsair XMS Twin2x-6400c5dhx Memory 2x 1g sticks and works good, tried putting 2 more of the same memory modules to upgrade to 4g and goes into a post loop??

I tried the other channel and works fine with ether set of memory and tried using three 1gb sticks works very good, went from 5.5 to 5.9 Windows Experience Index... not sure why?

Just adding that forth 1gb stick won't work, I've tried doing what other theads at Corair forum had said to fix the problem, nothing worked.

Now I have one half of a match pair and a spare memory slot, that can't seem to use :( And no real answer why.

Are you sure its a post loop and not a windows loop?

Disable full screen logo in the BIOS to see if 4GB shows on bootup.

If its not booting knock up the voltage on these:

MCH Core
MCH Reference
DRAM Voltage

And Performance Enhance to Standard.

No Post screen, and short beep continually about 20 times then restarts
standard setting, and have boosted the voltage, it has not solve the problem.

I can't understand why would there be a stabity issuse with DHX memory, and on the tested memory list for this motherboard

Is their a matching set of four DDR2 800/1066 memory that will work as dual mode x2 on a Gigabyte GA-EP45-UD3L v1.0 motherboard with Q8400 CPU

As long as the two channels match it should be alright. As you already know you usually have to increrase the Nortbridge voltage a bit to compensate for the extra loading of the four filled slots. The only other thing is to try running Memtest on the modules and make sure that there are no faults. Give it plenty of time, several loops.

With three sticks are you able to POST in all slots no matter what order their in? Or is their one slot it will not POST on? Bad slot maybe.

You are quite possibly right Peter, I was just trying to eliminate any bad memory first.

Yes but a read that the OP said “I tried the other channel and works fine with ether set of memory” so I'm thinking the ram is fine.

Often though a "trial" is only short and may miss underlying problems with the modules that a thorough testing with something like Memtest might show up. A bit like booting up a computer versus a complete burn in.

Now I'm using three 1gb, running in flex memory mode, CIA2 set racing (894mhz) with no problems, I have ran Memtest with no error's, Swap memory in different slots.  These two Match sets won't work together, since I have bought them a year apart, they must have some manufacturing differences that made them incompatible to run in Dual Channel Mode.

I am happy that you've managed to sort out the problem but I am surprised that the two kits of RAM won't work together. As long as they are the same part number I would have expected them to work.

My son had EXACTLY the same problem as you on his EP45 UD3R as he sought to upgrade his existing 2 x 1gb Corsair Dominator 1066 with an additional 2 x 1gb of the same memory. Even tried a different pair of Dominators from the retailer with the same result.

After a lot of faffing about we replaced the newly purchased Dominators with 2 x 2gb of GSkill 1066, making 6gb total, and guess what, works like a dream with the existing Dominators.

Maybe it was a case of using different makes of chips on the different modules. It's not what you would expect though and as long as you stuck to the same type you would expect them to work. :-\

There was about 18 months between the original Dominators and the additional ones. Seems strange that memory from a different manufacturer should work better with the existing Corsair memory.

That's what makes me wonder if they were using a different chip manufacturer.
