Cannot boot from Win 7 DVD or enter the BIOS

Cannot boot from Win 7 DVD or enter the BIOS
« on: August 12, 2010, 06:08:34 am »
Windows 7 is installed on my PC. When I try to boot from the Window 7 dvd, a prompt comes up saying "press any key..." but I press keys and no keyboard input is recognized.  Windows goes ahead and boots from the hard disk. Also, when I hit the Reset button on the case to force a re-boot, a screen comes up saying Windows did not shut down properly last time (something like that) and giving different options to be selected by the arrow keys. Again, the keyboard is not recognized no matter what keys I press. This is a brand new system I just built. Everything is working great except for this issue. Is there some BIOS setting I need to change to fix this? Some other issue going on?

Could be a couple of things causing the problem.

Faulty Keyboard
If it is USB Keyboard, check in BIOS that USB Keyboard Support is enabled.
If it is Wireless Keyboard make sure it is set-up properly and that the Dongle isn't connected to the PC via a USB Hub.

The message you are getting when forcing a reboot from windows is normal and is due to the fact that you haven't allowed the OS to complete its Shut-down routine.
Remember, when all else fails a cup of tea and a good swear will often help! It won't solve the problem but it will make you feel better.

absic covered most of the options but I take it that you are using a USB keyboard and if so try moving the receiver to another port especially if you have it installed in one of the front ports as you might have forgotten to connect them to the motherboard.

.

It is a USB keyboard. Where in BIOS do you enable USB keyboard support?

Hi,

I have a GA P35 DS4 motherboard with a Intel Core 2 duo procesor. I would like to install Win XP on my desktop. However I need to acess the BIOS to change the BOOT sequence.

When I switch on my desktop, I cannot access my Bios. I have connected one keyboard with PS2 port and another wireless keyboard.

It seems that none of these keyboards are recognised during the start up process.

I am new to this "Hardware" field.

So, can anyone help me with my problem  :(

Regards

You can not enter the bios settings without actually going into bios!!!!!!!!!! You hit the delete key while the machince is posting and then enter your bios and look to enable usb keyboard..Look in the intergrated peripherals and it will be there.

You can try hitting f8 on the keyboard to bring up the boot order, just select cd rom on the list to boot from.

EDIT BY MODERATOR: F12 is the key to use to enter the boot sequence not F8

F12 is boot order.

You may also need to hit the FN lock key to use the "F" keys if your "F" keys have multiple functions

I think, Fatman, that the point the OP was making was that how can he enter the BIOS if the keyboard isn't working. ;)

The best thing is to get a PS2 keyboard and keep it handy for this type of event.

Thanks for your reply.
However the problem is none of the keys on the keyboard work because my keyboard is not recognsed during start up.

If you have any other thoughts, it will be appreciated....

My keyboard doesnot have FN lock key.

Thanks for your reply. I was also wondering if it is because of the BIOS ?
Isit possible todowngrade the BIOS ?

You can not enter the bios settings without actually going into bios!!!!!!!!!! You hit the delete key while the machince is posting and then enter your bios and look to enable usb keyboard..Look in the intergrated peripherals and it will be there.

But the thing is, I cannot enter  BIOS because neither my "Delete" key or for that matter any other key on my keyboard works when the machine is posting.
