Help with old mainboard GA-K8NF-9 Rev-1 - Video Card Issue
« on: September 24, 2010, 02:11:20 pm »
I have just purchase a second hand gigabyte ga-k8nf-9 board to replace my damaged mainboard.

I want to find out is there a problem with the PCI express X16 slot. I also replaced my PCI video card Axle ATI Radeon HD 5570 128bit, 1 Gb DDR3.

This video card 5570 did not work for my mainboard. It work in the shop where I purchase it.

However, my older video card nVidia GS7300 work with this MB ga-k8nf-9.

I do not wish to waste my money again.  >:(

Can this MB work with nVidia GT8600? I have it old video card in another PC, if it can work I hope it can be swap and hope that will won't burn up anything.

Thank in advance.

Hi there,

If I understand you properly you want to run the Nvidia GT8600 using the GA-K8NF-9.
If that is the case you shouldn't have a problem as far as I can see and it shouldn't burn anything out on the motherboard.
Remember, when all else fails a cup of tea and a good swear will often help! It won't solve the problem but it will make you feel better.

So the new ATI 5570 doesn't work this MB?

I hope so that the GT8600 will work. Anyone else with experiences with this problem?

Did you plug in the extra power cables when you installed the 5570 card? I can't see why this card wouldn't work on this board.

This Video card 5570 doesn't come with any additional power plug just like my other video card. You can view the card at
http://www.axle3d.com

By the way, it comes with three outputs D-Sub, DVI and HDMI. Both D-Sub and DVI isn't the problem as the MB did not even boot up.

I don't have HDMI device to test. I be back later to check back before I yank out my GT8600 from another PC so... see ya later.

Are you sure that you have the model correct as when I looked on the link you gave they don't list it?
I found other makes though and as you say it is all powered by the PCIE slot. Maybe that's the problem it doesn't supply enough power through the x16 slot.

DM,

Yes, it's not in the list, but in the scrolling advertisment on the home page. This card is still new, so it not in the list yet.

That's what I thought, but my power supply is 550W Cooler Master.

I believed the the MB PCI-E is an older version. According to ATI web site, this card is a PCI-E Version 2. Maybe this MB is version 1?

Anyway, I will take out the GT8600 to try it out.

It wouldn't be the fault of the Coler Master PSU it would be the motherboard's capacity to supply enough power to the card through the board. A BIOS update might fix it or it might just be impossible.

Thanks absic115 and DM for replying,

I check gigabyte web site, it says nothing on the PCI-E. According to the site, it a bit complicated to reset before flashing. There could be some risk. I already had a hard time configuring the BIOs to boot up the harddisk due to the wrongly default SATA configuration.

Anyway, I took out the GT8600 and put it into the GA-K8NF-9. So far it works. The ATI 5570 also works the other PC which is a new MSI board KN9 Neo V2.

Signed, 2 mainboards failed within a month. But those two were already old model. Both were AGP mainboard, the working power supply blew my Video card and mainboard on the Abit AV8. Had to also replace the power supply.

The other Sempron gigabyte AGP slot was damage and could no longer work with the AGP. Had to purchase a PCI 32bit slot video card (Power Color ATI HD4350).

I think I will just stay with the current setup rather than updating the BIOs. I believed it wouldn't make any difference. I also believed that it might be due to the older version of the chipset. The NF4 as I recalled was the early version before the introduction PCI-E.

Well I am glad that you got both systems working in the end. I think that it was probably the best way to go to be honest.

Would you believe it? >:(  The newly purchased power supply CoolerMaster GX 550 watt blew up last saturday 2-oct-2010. Working for just 10 days (less than 24 hours switching on for use).

Luckily, the shop was willing to replace the PS instead of going down to the distributor which was very far away.

Phew!  :) The new PS works and nothing was damaged.

So the original problem with the 5570 not working, could well have been due to the PSU.

You're lucky that it didn't damage anything when it went pop!  :o

Just for information. The replacement Cooler Master GX 550 watts blew up again.  >:(.

Got me an Andyson 480 watts power supply as a replacement on 8/jan/2011. The price half lowerthan Cooler Master.

I'm not gonna trust this power supply even they gave me a new one.

Hi,

I've just tried to install an "Asus HD 5450 Silent 512MB DDR3" PCI-Express 2.1 graphics card in my ga-k8nf-9 v1.0 board (with the latest F12k BIOS and 450W PSU).  It won't POST (i.e. it doesn't even beep after being powered on).  The k8nf-9 board works fine with my old PCI-E 1 nVidia graphics card.

A little bit of googling suggests that some nForce4 boards struggle with PCI-E 2.1 graphics cards unless the mobo manufacturer has released a recent BIOS to fix the issue.  It seems that PCI-E 2.1 breaks backwards compatibility with PCI-E 1.0: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/PCI_Express#PCI_Express_2.1

It may be possible for the video card manufacturer to release a VGA BIOS as well to help you.I remember 8800GT-s(PCI-E 2.0) received BIOS updates to work with VIA chipsets (PCI-E 1.1) as well as ATI 5xxx getting new VGA BIOS-es in similar scenarious.
