Wrong audio unit playing (Not the chosen default one!!)
« on: September 25, 2010, 10:36:19 am »

I have everything set up and working all nice, but my USB Terratec DMX 6Fire audio interface will not play.

It's playing with no problems at all on my sons computer, and I've tried all options of downloading latest drivers, deleting all drivers completely, reinstalling, blocking the inbuilt audio from the BIOS and I dont know what. I even have tried a clean installation and update of everything from scratch on two harddrives with both Vista 32 bits, and now running Windows 7 as 64 bits.

This is my computers' hardware:

• Gigabyte GA-X58A-UD3R, X58, Socket-1366, DDR3, ATX, USB3.0, SATA 6Gb/s, 2xPCI-Ex(2.0)x16, Revision 2.0
• Chieftec Super Series 650W PSU, ATX 12V V2.3, 80 Plus, Modular, 1x 6pin+1x 6+2pin PCIe, 6x SATA, 140mm Fan
• Intel Core™ i7 Quad Processor i7-930, Quad Core, 2.8Ghz, Socket 1366, 8MB, 130W, Boxed w/fan
• Corsair XMS3 DDR3 1600MHz 6GB CL9 Kit w/3x 2GB XMS3 modules, CL9-9-9-24, for Core i7
• XFX Radeon HD 5850 1GB GDDR5 PCI-Express 2.0, 2xDVI-I, HDMI, DisplayPort, 725MHz
• Hitachi Deskstar™ 7K1000.C 1TB 7200RPM, 3,5", 32MB Cache, SATA 3Gb/s

As you can see in the attached image, the inbuilt audio is still playing, even as the USB unit is chosen for as being the default one.

Anyone having some great ideas about the solution to this?

So you have set “Azalia Codec” in the BIOS to disable ?

yes, and when it's disabled I cant even see any sign of sound in anything of what's left in the mixer, and to get the sound back from the motherboard inbuilt unit after set it back to Auto (either disabled or auto is only options there), I have to uninstall the drivers even to get any sound back at all.

Do you have the USB Terratec DMX 6Fire in one of the blue USB ports (the ports under the NIC)? If so try it in one of the other ones.

Another thing to check is do you have the Terratec device switched on when you power up the PC?  I used to have a similar Yamaha USB Audio device and it would only work if it was switched on prior to start-up.

Also, stupid question I know but, do you have to make any changes to the DMX 6 Fire's Control Panel to increase the volume or set the default audio outs. I have to do this with my Delta 1010. By default, Windows 7, for some reasons, always sets the Default Outputs to channels 7 & 8 rather than Channel 1 & 2 which I have connected to my external amplifier.
Remember, when all else fails a cup of tea and a good swear will often help! It won't solve the problem but it will make you feel better.

I've tried to connect both the USB 3 and USB 1/2 ports, yes. No change.

The device is running on external power, it's not powered by USB-port, and are on all the time (no on/off switch at all, actually),  and it even gives power to the keyboard through another USB port even when computer is switched all off. (Lights in the keboard displays without any external power supply)

The DMX mixer is set all ok, output from wave port 1 & 2 - everything was working very well on my sons computer with XP SP3, it's probably something in this motherboard making it all going berserk. And the ASIO sound, with all of my VSTi's, is going all very well through the 6Fire USB using my Cakewalk Sonar with MIDI. it's only all the rest (windows sounds and IE and so) not working. I never did manage to get it working on this computer at all, either with Vista 32 bits nor Windows 7 64 bits. Tried both the driver on the installation CD and the latest downloadable one in Vista, and only the latest drivers for everything in this now running 64 bits Windows 7 setup.

Thank you for any ideas anyway, it might be the smallest little thing, really, who knows!!  :-)

It usually is and that's often what makes it so hard to find! :-\ Have you tried to run the system without this USB Terratec DMX 6Fire installed? If so do the windows sounds etc work then?

Have you installed the Chipset drivers?
http://downloadcenter.intel.com/Detail_Desc.aspx?agr=Y&ProdId=816&DwnldID=18494&lang=eng
^ you could just to be sure it installs add the -overall to the .exe in a shortcut.

You shouldn’t have to do this but have you tried installing windows with “Azalia Codec” disabled from the start?

All normal windows sounds has always been working, whether the DMX has been installed/connected or not, yes.  :-)

The DMX is the unit I need for the music programme I'm using, which works all fine with ASIO, so in worse case scenario I'll have to just plug out the inbuilt card and to plug in the DMX when I do my myusic stuff, but I also would like to be able to play along with youtube and Windows Media Player.

And of course it should be working out that way too!!  :-)  It's very strange that the windows sounds all seem to be going to the inbuilt sound card no matter what the configuration is looking like!

...And the windows media player goes to an error while trying to play with the DMX 6Fire as a default...

Setting it back to the inbuilt audio, everything works good again...!!!

Sometimes you just wonder why you try ::) There must be some way of getting it to work but I must admit to it not being my area of expertise.

Well, I agree with you totally - There should be possible some way. And I'm not known for giving it all up at first try, so to speak :-)

I really would like all sounds through this unit and not a split solution. That's all.  :-)

And just for your information, I get it working fully out now, using normal audio cables for the in&out's, from the normal motherboard audio out jack, and also optical wire would work same way, I'm sure - Gonna try that too now...

It's just the USB cable connection option (still) not working, and never really did on my gigabyte motherboard....!!!

Any suggestions about this is issue are still of a very great interest, of course!!!  :-)

The USB connections are always a problem and whilst they can be made to work usually they are a lot of trouble. There is someone on the AMD section having problems with theirs also.

Well, even though there might "always" be troubble with the USB connections or not, I'd however be very careful about blaming the audio interface itself for the motherboards' audio out not to play the default audio unit, but actually to keep on sending the signal to other places...  :-)
