another X58A-UD3R bios problem, please help!
« on: October 02, 2010, 09:24:08 am »
i recently built my pc about 10 days ago.
i7 930
corsair 1600 6G
x58a-ud3r ver 2.0 bios FA
nvida gtx 465 1g
windows 7 home premium

everything working fine but only read ram 6G (4G usable). i googled and find new bios FB could fix the problem then i Q-flash to FB.
now i am having BSoD after windows starting up from a cold start, i cant get into log in screen. i will get about 5 BSoD then eventually i can log in and everything working fine from there. and the ram is reading 6G. i can restart many times at this time and no BSoD.

now i just afraid to turn off my PC for the night, because all problem will come back, i have to struggle for about 10 mins to let PC warm up to let me log in.  has anyone have a solution to this?

Hi and welcome to the forum.

There are two things it could be. The first as you have already tried is to update the BIOS. As this is the latest official BIOS the only thing to try on this front is to see if there is a Beta update available. You can ask GGTS, they might be able to supply one or check out TweakTown http://forums.tweaktown.com/  because they often get updates before we do.

Secondly it is worth checking your CPU socket for any bent pins. Now i know you are thinking "there won't be any it was working ok before the update" but that is exactly the type of problem that has been showing up as a result of bent pins. They are not easy to spot and if you have any difficulty take a couple of close up macro shots and post them here for us to check for you.

One more thing I have just thought of is are you using the 64 bit version of Windows?

Ok fair enough. It is better not to mess with things if you are not that proficient. Try installing the BIOS update but make sure that you use QFlash not @BIOS as it is much more dangerous.

well, i q-flashed my bios from FB to FB11 and BSoD is gone.

from cold start after verifiying DMI pool stage it will say something like trying to recover lost memory and then restart itself and then goes into log in page with no BSoD. So basicaly every time i cold start my PC it will restart itself once, it is good enough for me. plus my ram is always 6G.

this problem is exactly same with other people, so i believe its another bios problem. until they release some more stable bios i will use FB11.

When you updated the BIOS did you elect to keep the DMI information? If so that could be your problem. Try reflashing and this time select not to keep the DMI when asked on the QFlash screen.  ;)

now i am having BSoD after windows starting up from a cold start,

We keep seeing the same old problems being reported  with this motherboard and I too have had many of the same problems. My first motherboard had to be replaced due to a faulty memory slot (it also had the 6gb/4gb usable problem when it did work). The replaced motherboard also had the same 6gb (4gb usable) problem but this was finally fixed by installing one of the beta BIOs just prior to FB final. I also have the occasional BSOD which I cannot resolve. I have tested it by leaving the PC on all day with absoultely nothing running. Some days it is fine but other days I return to find the "Windows has recovered etc " message.

There is no excuse for errors of this nature in a motherboard which has now been around for some time. This is the first time I have ever used a Gigabyte motherboard and, based upon my first experience, it will likely be the last. I was told that the Gigabyte brand is one of the most reliable but my first experience has not echoed that claim.

I do understand your frustration and have been there myself with other boards. I actually moved over from Asus to Gigabyte because of the problems with their boards. I think to be reaslistic all manufacturers have their problems that seem to re-occur even if that is just because they get aired more on the forums. At least with Gigabyte the boards are well constructed and designed and they do at least keep trying to resolve any problems with BIOS updates and the like which cannot be said of all other manufacturers.

Guys please try FC1 BIOS
http://www.fileden.com/files/2009/12/20/2696817/x58aud3r.fc1.zip

Please use Qflash, and disable Keep DMI Data before you flash, then reboot.   Then enter the BIOS and  load optimized defaults and save/apply F10 and reboot, then go back to the BIOS and set your needed SATA/Disk settings, and all other CPU and memory settings you need to adjust.

I  am already running FC1 but my problems still persist. I think that the BSOD that I get is related to a memory issue but I believe this issue is with the motherboard rather than the memory itself. I hold this belief because the memtest errors always show errors at around the 182-256MB mark, even though I swap the actual memory cards around the various slots. I have already had my original MB replaced because of a similar memory slot error. Per my earlier post, the PC sometimes runs for days without a problem. At other times I can leave it with no programs running, only to return and find the "Windows has recovered..." error. In all my years of working with PCs, I have never had as much trouble as I have with this X58A-UD3R

If you are convinced that the motherboard is at fault then contact your local Australian Gigabyte centre to arrange an RMA for it.

This is already a replaced motherboard. The first one was replaced because it had similar problems. I have spent hours with the two X58A-UD3R's that I've had and am convinced that the model suffers from general issues rather than issues specific to my boards.

I would be much happier if they just took it back and gave me a refund so that I could buy a board that does not cause so much frustration.

I am afraid that is something outside our sphere of influence. You will have to take that up with your local Gigabyte centre. Personally I don't agree with you because there are very many thousands of these boards in current use without the problems you are encountering. Anyway good luck. ;)

I hope you're right Dark Mantis because I am one of those thousands of users with this board...and I am having cold boot failures with bios FB. I already flash to bios FB from install default in order to fix the not recognising RAM fault...now I haven't flashed to FC1....but I hope to hell it works and I can forget about these issues related to this board!
