New Build PC won't install Windows 7
« on: October 02, 2010, 07:24:46 pm »
Hi all, I've just built a new PC with a GA-X58A-UD3R version 2 MOBO. Now when i switch everything on and put my Windows 7 disc in my DVD ROM/CD-Drive ,the BIOS appears on the screen and then it stops at CD-DVD ROM.. and then appears to run on a black screen with a white line  that stops after about 1 minute, then my PC just shuts down. What am I missing or doing wrong ?

Thanks

Well possibly you haven't set the BIOS up to boot from the optical drive or the drive is not connected properly. I would suggest checking all the cables to the drive and motherboard first.
Can you list all your hardware in detail please and we might have a better idea.  ;)

Hi Mantis thanks for the reply. Ok have been into the BIOS and got it to boot from DVD-ROM drive, but problem still persists and it justs cuts out and PC power goes off altogether. Have looked inside and double checked all my leads and connections and everything seems ok. Here's my hardware.

OK now we have a better idea of what we are dealing with. Pull all the connections off everything power and data. Leave just the motherboard with CPU/heatsink/fan, one RAM module in the first slot, buzzer and PSU connected. Now try and boot. It will fail of course but it should give you a series of beeps. Post them here.

Have tried what you said. First of all I'm not getting any 'beeps' so there's a sound issue configuration wrong somewhere even when I connect a pair of speakers-but hey maybe I'm connecting them wrong I am new to all of this.

Yes I am afraid that you are. The speaker/buzzer for the BIOS beeps is connected to the FPH( Front Panel Header) There is a row of pins there that are for the speaker. If you check the manual it is shown on page 30

http://download.gigabyte.eu/FileList/Manual/mb_manual_ga-x58a-ud3r_v2.0_e.pdf

They are the last four pins on the top right . Only the two outside ones are used.

Right had a look in PC at F-Panel and this is what i've got connected starting from bottom row left:
HDD LED (2 pin) orange/white wires put in first two pins bottom left.
RESET SW (2 pins) blue/white wires put in the third and fourth pins bottom left.
POWER SW (2 pins) grey/white wires third and fourth pins on top row left
POWER LED (three pins) bottom row last three pins.

So either i have got these wrong ,because I can't find any other wires in my Lian-Li case.

You probably haven't got a buzzer/speaker connected. In the top right of the box that you are looking at F_Panel there are four pins the two outside ones are for attaching a speaker/buzzer. You can buy one for about a pound. I would recommend a buzzer as it is easier to fit but your choice.

Prolonged beep. Would that be more than about 0.5 seconds?

Yes, I'm wondering if its the processor that could be causing it to switch itself off.

Ok then. It shouldn't do that. So we need to go to the next stage which is building the system outside of the case. That way we can be sure that there are not any shorts etc.

Make sure that you observe anti-static precautions.

Lay some cardboard or something similar that is non-conductive on the worktop and remove the motherboard/CPU/heatsink/fan/buzzer/one stick of memory and PSU from the case and put it on the cardboard. Now I know you haven't got any graphics but try and boot. The system should try and then fail emitting a series of beeps. Please post what sounds it makes.

Possibly but not necessarily. That is what we are going to determine.

Please take an image of the screen you are seeing, with the white line on it, then post it here.

Sounds like it might be the install screen starting, so just would like to be sure.

One beep means it started correctly, and has posted past the BIOS and handed things over to the CD or hard drive.   Are you sure your install DVD works?   What ports do you have your hard drives connected to (Color and #), and what BIOS settings do you have set for the following
