Usb ports won't work GA-965GM
« on: October 08, 2010, 02:08:54 pm »
I have a GA-965GM-S2 motherboard and everything works fine but the usb ports.

I have a Intel E6600 Quad processor and a HD5750 Radeon graphics card and 4 GB memory.

When I put in a usb stick in a port the stick do light up but there is no response from the computer that it is connected.

And I think have enabled the usb ports from Bios. Windows 7 works fine, as do the graphics cards, sound etc but nothing from
the usb ports.  :(

Any help would be appreciated!

Thanks :)
More info like?

I have a Cruzer 8 Gb stick. I have another computer to check that it works and it does.

Then when I put the stick in "this" computer the light inside the stick glows, which means at least it is getting power I guess.

But the computer doesn't seem to recognise the stick as no new drive appears and it isn't reacting as if it was there.

I have tried to install a usb pci card and then I can use those usb ports on that card.

But I need that pci slot for my wireless pci card as my graphics card eats up the other pci slot.

Sorry for the many responses.  When I have my headphones connected to the front and put in the usb stick at the front I can hear this crispy sound which make it seem as it is reacting to something...

Hi,
If your USB headphones are working it would point to the fact that the USB ports are functioning OK and the problem is possibly software rather than hardware based.

Has your USB stick been formatted on a MAC by any chance?
What format has it been formatted in, FAT16, FAT32, NTFS?
Remember, when all else fails a cup of tea and a good swear will often help! It won't solve the problem but it will make you feel better.

AH, now you misunderstood me.

I am talking about regular headphones, not usb ones.

I have only a usb stick, usb mouse, usb keyboard, usb wireless adapter and a usb external harddrive.

And none of them work.

Have you got the USB enabled in the BIOS?
Have you installed the chipset drivers for the motherboard?
What symbol has it got beside USB in Device Manager?

Usb is enabled on the motherboard.

The drivers for the usb ports are detected by win 7 right away when I start the computer and have enabled usb in the bios.

What do you mean by symbol beside usb in Device manger? What should there be for symbol?

Well, I started up the computer and checked.

There is a sub category in device manager called:

Universal Serial Bus controllers

In that category there is written 14 lines.

From the top:

Inter(R) ICH8 Family USB Universal Host Controller - 2830

Inter(R) ICH8 Family USB Universal Host Controller - 2831

Inter(R) ICH8 Family USB Universal Host Controller - 2832

Inter(R) ICH8 Family USB Universal Host Controller - 2834

Inter(R) ICH8 Family USB Universal Host Controller - 2835

Inter(R) ICH8 Family USB2 Universal Host Controller - 2836

Inter(R) ICH8 Family USB2 Universal Host Controller - 283A

USB Root Hub

USB Root Hub

USB Root Hub

USB Root Hub

Before each line there is an icon of a usb connector. And when I click on each line it says device is working properly.

All looks fairly normal to me. Are you trying to connect via a hub or anything external?

No, the computer is right now not connected to anything as I have just installed Windows 7 on it and my graphics card.

There are no cables on the motherboard that need to be connected or?

Should think not.

I wonder what it could be.  If I remove them in windows and disable them in the bios and then enable them again in the bios Win 7 will automatically
find the drivers.
There is power to the usb ports otherwise the stick wouldn't glow.

But "my computer" in win 7  is still as empty as ever :/
