GIGABYTE 870A-UD3 BAD CPU TEMP SENSOR?

Hi,
I am using this mobo with AMD Phenom 965 and I noticed that the cpu temp is always at 79c, but the cores are 35-37c. I've use core temp and everest ultimate and speed fan to monitor the temps and they all say the same thing abut the cpu temp. I bought it from newegg and I read in some of the comments people complaining about the north bridge temp always showing high. Some people think it's just a bad sensor, so my question is... if it's just a bad sensor, would it still give me a problem if I want to overclock my cpu? Because if the mobo is showing cpu temp at 79c wouldnt that cause the system to shut down for safe reasons?

Are you using the latest bios for your board ? Anyway the 79c temp sensor isn't the cpu temperature if it's always at that value.

Yes.. I have the latest bios.. I have used everest and it says next to CPU 79c. the thing is that I just got  this mobo, but the asus I had before did not say that. It actually said the correct temp for the cpu which is 35-37c.

It quite possibly be a stuck temperature sensor. It is not an uncommon fault.

so, i shouldn't worry about it?.. I am planning on overclocking...the temp on the cores are fine. If its just the sensor that it's bad, should I return it or it's something not to worry about?

You should see what is the reported CPU temperature in BIOS then try an overclock if it's safe.

Yeah in the bios it says 36c. I overclocked it from 3.4ghz to 3.8ghz and ran prime95 for almost 9 hours and the average temp was 51c. Now Im going for 3.9ghz and prime95 has run for 2hrs max temp 55c with the fans at low speed, with the fans at high the max temp is 51c... wish me luck... I'm using Thermaltake Frio cooler..it's awesome. So, as long as the bios says the cpu is 35-37c I'm OK right?..i guess my real question is... should I return the mobo just for a bad sensor, if it's just that?...It's just that I don't feel like going through the hassle of taking everything off and putting it back together cuz that Fio cooler is kinda of a pain to install

I have tested a lot of different apps to show my 1090T's temp in conjunction with a couple of hardware sensors and I have found that Core Temp is pretty good ( get it here: http://www.alcpu.com/CoreTemp/ ). If you are running Windows you can set it up to show the temp in the Notification Area of the toolbar and it starts up with the PC.

If BIOS is showing the temp as 36°C and your software is showing at a constant 79°C, I doubt there is a stuck sensor and it is more than likely a software glitch rather than a problem with the hardware, so I don't think changing the Mobo over something like this is really practical.

Good luck with the rest over your overclocking attempts but, if I may add a note of caution, watch out as the Max Temp for the 965 is 62°C!

I also use core temp and when I had the Asus mobo the Tj Max in core temp coincided with the cpu temp in bios, but with with this gigabyte mobo the Tj Max shows 79c constant, even when prime95 is running for hours. I have used the same softwares to check the temps and they all have worked fine with previous mobos..this is the only mobo that has given me this problem. I have tried re-setting the cpu and clearing the cmos, but no luck. I haven't tried removing the battery, but doubt it will do anything. And yes, I am paying close attention to the max temp as I am aware of max temp is 62c. So far it hasn't gotten over 55c. Even if it stays at 55c I think I will be ok as there is no game out there or software that will stress the cpu like prime95. When I play games the hottest it gets is 48c..and that's after playing for hours.

I have talked to Gigabyte and the answer I got was to try another CPU, but I know that there is nothing wrong with my cpu as this issued started when I started using this mobo, so the tech had no answer for me. He did mentioned  i could send it to them but if it's just a bad sensor i don't feel like going through that hassled as I mentioned before. The main reason I posted this here is to see if anyone else had this problem with this particular mobo or maybe a different one and to see what they did about it.
