What's the difference between the Northbridge 790X and the Northbridge 890?

Hi again everyone!

Ok, I recently purchased the GIGABYTE GA-890XA-UD3.  I just noticed the Northbridge chip is listed as a AMD Northbridge 790X.

Here's my question:What is the difference between the AMD Northbridge 790X and the AMD Northbridge 890?

Is there any difference at all?  If there is a difference, how important is it?

What does the Northbridge and Southbridge chips on a MB do anyway?  [do they anything to do with the bridges in London, and what  is the song we sang as children, "London Bridges falling down" mean anyway?

It's me,

Soar

Absic, wow!  That article makes it so clear that there really is no difference esp. when we consider my 890xa-ud3 came with the SB850!  So now I am even more happier because it really is a great MB and chip!

Thanks,

Soar

No problem Soar,

I learnt the hard way when it came to buying PC Components and I hate to think how much money I wasted in my early days, following so called professional advice. Whenever anyone asks me what board or other parts to get, I always imagine that it is my money I'm spending and try to offer what I believe will offer the best performance versus cost and with the least amount of aggravation. There's nothing more frustrating than spending a lot of money on hardware only to find, when you come to put it together, that something isn't compatible.

Of course, we can all get supplied with something that isn't working as it should but, by sharing knowledge, hopefully we can minimise the problems.  ;)

I would like to second that experience that absic has just detailed and say we all learn as we go along and it is better to pass on some of that knowledge so others can learn from our mistakes rather than have to make their own ;)

Absic, I totally agree with you and thanks once again for the excellent advice and info you have provided on my RAM, motherboard, and AMD CPU.   What is really nice is that you guys have tested a lot of this stuff and that adds even more credibility and much needed expertise.

I still hope Gigabyte with start sending both you and DM one of every motherboard they have ever created!  I think it would do them good and probably increase their sales too!

Yes, DM!  And you sure have passed on a lot of valuable information and expertise to us here.  Thanks again and hope Gigabyte will start sending you one of every model MB they have ever produced!

Only too glad to have helped Soar,
Thanks for the kind words although I don't think  could manage all those boards, I would need to move to somewhere significantly larger...now how much room do I need for a  server farm  ;D

LOL, well, we let's not worry about where to find the room until after Gigabyte sends you one of each of their motherboards!

Thanks again DM for your excellent advice, suggestions, and instructions!

Absic,

We are still negotiating the price....he suggested 3 pints of dark ale a week, I asked him for one salmon fish per week. He informed there are no salmon in England!  :o

We hope to resolve our disagreements ;D soon.
