More on that Microsoft UAA driver
« on: November 09, 2010, 03:46:18 pm »
This is a bit of an extension to my earlier topic entitled "Am buying a GA-P55-US3L: which newest drivers and BIOS do I need?" and should be of particular interest to contributor Wonderwrench.

The mystery about this driver continues. In the Troubleshooting section of the user's manual for my newly-acquired GA-P55-US3L there's a FAQ concerning the 'onboard audio driver'. Reference is made to the Microsoft UAA driver, which is more fully called 'Microsoft UAA Driver for High Definition Audio'. In response to the FAQ's question as to why the onboard HD audio driver cannot be successfully installed, the Answer suggests to first check that all service packs for XP are installed, and to ensure that the MS UAA driver is then installed. This apparently should be obvious by looking in System Devices, in Device Manager.

The inference here is that the MS UAA driver is a requisite for running HD audio from the motherboard; it does not necessarily have anything to do with running third-party soundcards, such as will be the case with my situation. I shall be disabling the 'onboard' audio in the BIOS.

On my current PC, on which I'm running XP, I'm using that self-same third-party soundcard (I'll be swapping it across to the new PC shortly). And on the current PC I also have SP3 installed. I've looked in Device Manager for any sign of an MS UAA driver and have found no such thing. Thus, I'm beginning to think that if you use a separate soundcard and disable the onboard audio, neither does an MS UAA driver get installed by SP3 nor is it necessary to add it. Perhaps the UAA driver does get automatically installed with SP3 but only if the BIOS is saying that onboard audio is enabled?

Right, now. Where's that soundcard of mine? What's the proper way to uninstall it from this current machine?

Actually, it being a Creative Audigy Soundblaster card (PCI bus), it's not as straightforward as you'd think. See here:

It's not simply a matter of using Add/Remove Programs. To tidy up everything, there are odd WDM drivers, a Programs folder, and temporary files to also uninstall.

Oh didn't realize what you had there. Have you tried Revo Uninstaller, makes light work of most things?

Of course if you have to get technical there's always the crowbar ;D
