GA-H55M-UD2H - In BIOS Response

Hi All, before i begin here is my system:-

Intel Core i3 540 3.06GHz
Gigabyte GA-H55M-UD2H Intel H55 (Socket 1156)
OCZ Gold 4GB (2x2GB) DDR3 PC3-10666C9 1333MHz (OCZ3G1333LV4GK)
(Currently running with one stick in slot 1)
OCZ ModXStream Pro 500w
Western Digital Caviar Black 640GB
Running Windows 7

All components brand new

Issue: When in the BIOS and moving around  menus etc, the keyboard response can be rather laggy, and then will just skip along very quickly and loop around, i have to press Escape sometimes to get out of the loop.

One example of this is in the MIT menu, moving through the frequency/voltage items etc can take a while, then the system will suddenly jump through, and then repeatedly scroll through the menus, the only way to stop this is to escape out.

I have been having RAM stability issues and wondered if anyone else had seen this weird BIOS thing, or whether it may be due to my RAM?

Hi Ali and welcome to the Gigabyte Forum.

I would say that it is all down to your memory. You are going to be having problems trying to run Win7 now with only one stick inserted anyway but to make sure I would advise running Memtest 86+ on the modules one at a time for at least ten loops each.

Are you using 32 or 64 bit Windows7 ?

Are you using the onboard graphics?

It could also be the keyboard causing this, be sure to test with another one if you can before you buy anything else.

thank you for responding

I am using Windows 32 Bit, and i am using a Dell USB Keyboard, the Keyboard has worked fine for many years, it is in the first USB slot next to the old ps2 socket, will see if i can find an old one to test though

Incidentally i breadboarded the motherboard last night (i think thats the term, took it right out of case and laid on a non conductive surface) and powered up via screwdriver with no hard or CD drive attached, just to test memory.

When powered i went into BIOS and loaded optimized defaults and re-tested first stick of RAM in Slot 1, no errors what so ever after 15 passes

I then took my other memory module and placed in the same slot and ran the same test, got errors straight away. stopped this test, completely powered off, left for a few hours, came back to it, re-seated the RAM and performed the same test and got lots of errors again.

I will RMA the RAM, before i do, would you suggest any other voltages etc to test at with Memtest86+, or should the optimized defaults be ok for testing?

Also you mentioned i would get errors in Windows 7 with 1 memory module Dark Mantis, and i have been getting odd BSODs and crashes when running 1 stick, this is with the memory module which passed the above Memtest86+, why would this be, is it because of the dual-channel nature of the RAM?

Lastly i am using onboard graphics, and one interesting thing that happens is i will get constant reboots when windows tries to initialise the Video Drivers sometimes, i have read somewhere this could be a RAM issue also.

As I said before I thought it was most likely a memory issue and you seem to have confirmed that. The reason for the problems that you encountered during use with only the one good stick of memory could be down to configuration or simply that Windows 7 requirement of memory is greater than other OS's. Also as you quite rightly said bad RAM can cause all sorts of problems including loading the graphics drivers.

Make sure that you RMA the memory as a set and receive a matched set back.

I will be sending off the RAM at the weekend, will report back with the results.

When i get the (hopefully) new RAM back, can i ask again would you (or anyone else in the forums) suggest any other voltages etc to test at with Memtest86+, or should the optimized defaults be ok for testing?

Hi Chris

The optimised BIOS defaults settings should be fine for most things as long as you aren't looking to overclock the system. However if you have any problems please just post back and we will see what we can do for you.

Hi all,

A quick update here, i received the replacement memory yesterday, began testing in the same setup as before

Stick 1 (in known good slot 1 on the MB) and received 3-5 errors on each pass in test 8 in Memtest86+. I did 7 passes

Stick 2 (in known good slot 1 on MB) received no errors at all after 15 passes


I will re-test the memory again tonight, in the same slot and in some of the other MB slots to be sure

By all means test again but any errors means the test and  module failed.

Can i ask what RAM has anyone else got working in their GA-H55M-UD2H? Just in case i may need to get another brand.

Anything but OCZ Gold!

Seriously a lot of members have been having trouble with this memory so if you can try something else I would recommend it. Crucial or Corsair are both well respected makes. Just make sure that you check the QVL of either the Gigabyte site or the memory manufactures site for the compatible modules.

To keep you all in the loop here i have had a word with OCZ, who have asked me to test the memory again, but with the following settings:

Set Memory Frequency to { 1333 Hhz }
Set Performance Enhance to { Standard }
Set DRAM Timing Selectable to { Expert }
Set DRAM Timings to 9-9-9-20 (CL-TRCD-TRP-TRAS)
Set TRFC to { 88 }
Set Command Rate to { 2 }

Set QPI/Vtt Voltage to { 1.35 volts }
Set DRAM Voltage to { 1.65 volts }

I'm going to try with defaults first, and then move onto this pattern, will let you know what happens

Hi all,

Sorry this has taken so long to reply, but my RMA got caught in the snow and i only got the RAM back yesterday

So I put the new RAM into test and left everything at defaults and so far so good

Stick 1: 7 passes no errors
Stick 2: 11 passes no errors

Both sticks in: 14 passes and no errors

So fingers crossed i might have a pair which are working

I'm putting everything back in the case tonight and reloading Windows, so again fingers and everything crossed it might be ok!

OK methinks this is a solved matter now, the new RAM has been behaving impeccably, it only took 3 RMA's! And I have been using my PC the way it was intended, instead of in bits Memtesting every day 

and this post comes courtesy from the new PC!
