X58A UD3R (Rev 1.0) - Network connection issue
« on: November 23, 2010, 05:13:45 pm »
Hi all,

First post, help, please.

Soon after build (about 8 months ago) I had an intermittent  problem of no network connection on boot.

Sometimes a reboot would correct. If not, reinstalling the driver always solved the problem.

I contacted Gigabyte support but their only suggestion was to return the board. I pondered whether to live with it or go through the painful RMA process.

Then, for no apparent reason, the problem disappeared.

About three weeks ago it reappeared. I installed the most up to date drivers (7.18.322.2010) from the Gigabyte website, but I still have to reinstall the drivers after almost every boot.

Any ideas?

Thanks,

CraigZ

Hi Craig and welcome to the Gigabyte UK Forum.

The most obvious thing would be to change the cable over to make sure it isn't just that.

After that if you still have the problem see if it makes any difference if you physically move the cable connection where it enters the computer/motherboard.

Hi Dark Mantis,

Thanks for the welcome.

I have tried another cable, same problem. The bit I don't understand is that reinstalling the driver always works!

Today, for the first time for quite a while, Network connected on boot!

I'm not sure what you mean by, 'move the cable connection where it enters the computer/motherboard'? There is only one LAN port on the I/O panel.

Apart from this, the board has met or exceeded all my expectations.

Regards,

CraigZ

Hi Craig
Actually you have more or less proved what I wanted you to do by replacing the cable. I just needed you to see if it made any difference to the connection when you moved(wiggled) the cable. It is possible that it is a dry joint/bad connection there somewhere on the mounting.

Hi Dark Mantis,

You are probably correct: a faulty socket.

But why would reinstalling the driver always work?

To be perfectly honest I really don't know but it makes the most sense.
The only other thing you could try would be to update the BIOS if there is one available for your board. Which one are you running at the moment?

Me neither  ;D

F5, I think?

Didn't really want to do a BIOS update. I have this running an i7 930 really sweet, on air, at 4.00GHz!

Thanks for your help.

IIRC, after a completely uneventful build, I updated to the latest BIOS, updated Drivers and Windows, then set about OCing offline.

The first instance of no Network connection on boot occured weeks after getting everything stable and using the PC.

So the answer to your question, 'Did you have this problem at stock speeds?' is "No", but qualified by the fact that it wasn't connected at stock speed for any length of time.

Hope that makes sense.

CraigZ

Dark Mantis,

The problem persisted and I started, sporadically, to drop connection to the router.

Re-booting the router would often restore connection, though not always. Eventually, I noticed the PSU was warmer than usual.

I measured the output voltage from the PSU. It should have been 12V, it was 16.1V!!!!!

I changed the PSU.

That was more than 6 months ago and I've not had a connection failure on boot or when running since.

Bound to get one now that I've posted this  ;)

Regards,

CraigZ
