GA X58A UD3R(rev 2) - USB devices and Boot issue
« on: December 12, 2010, 01:49:54 pm »
Hi,

1st Problem:
I am using the FC bios version of the board. I am currently using Razer Deathadder(Mouse) and Microsoft Sidwewinder x4 (Keyboard). Both of the devices are USB (not PS2). Occasionally, when i start my pc, the mouse and keyboard stop responding. Razer's logo, doesnt glow and the keyboard's backlighting doesnt work(automatically implies that devices arent working). In order to make them work, i have to connect these devices to other ports.

Also, 1/10 times that they dont respond, system hangs up at the Gigabyte Post Logo, with no activity. I have to unplug both the devices and reboot to make things work. My hunch says it has something to do with the power in the usb ports that is still present after switching the power off but keeping UPS power on(Usb 3x charge perhaps).

Anyways, i may be wrong, but this is seriously annoying and very random.

2nd Problem:
I am using WDC black 1 TB Sata 3 drive as my main. WD1002FAEX-00Y9A0.The main problem i am facing is that when i try to setup a 2.5" HDD (Fujitsu 120GB), and boot my pc, the boot sector of the WDC crashes. I get the error " Disk Boot failure " and is irrecoverable. I have confirmed this issue by using a different 2.5" HDD(Seagate Momentus 320GB). My BIOS(version FC) is able to detect all the drives properly.

Motherboard - GA X58A UD3R
All my drivers are up to date.

I am plugging the WDC into the Sata 3 port of the motherboard and the 2.5" drives into Sata 2 ports.

There is no alternate other than to format the WDC and reload the OS back into it.

Also, i tried the same procedure with an IDE drive, and surprisingly no error occured and I could access the drive from the desktop.

Please help me with both these issues, i appreciate it! thanks

Hi and welcome to the Gigabyte Forum.

Firstly have you got USB Legacy Devices enabled in the BIOS?
If not do so.

Are you connecting the keyboard/mouse via the USB3 ports?
If so move to USB2.

Moving on to the HDD problem are all the drives formatted the same eg NTFS?
Is the problem drive encrypted or compressed?

USB Legacy is enabled in the bios. I am using these in uSB 2 ports only.

For the HD issue, drives are not encrypted or compressed, and have been formatted with NTFS file system. I even tried using a clean formatted 2.5" drive and faced the same issue

Drive wise it could be a problem with the drive itself of course.

What BIOS version are you running at the moment?

It might just be worth trying to clear the CMOS and make it reload everything.

Remove the power cable from the mains supply and then press the power switch on the case for a few seconds just to drain any residual energy in the PSU capacitors.

Once done remove the motherboard battery for at least ten minutes before replacing it.

Next plug back into the mains supply and boot.

You will now need to enter the BIOS by pressing DEL and load Opimised BIOS Defaults.

Make any other changes to the BIOS settings to suit your self and then press F10 to save and exit.

Yes this happens to me aswell

Added to the long long list of problems i have with this board

Any BIOS other than FA will not boot unless I have the flash drive inserted that I updated BIOS from

USB mouse and keyboard do not respond or light up until system has booted if it does boot at all

bob, why don't you RMA your board as you have so many problems with it. There are so many of these boards sold and the vast majority must be working fine. Get it changed mate and hopefully kick all these problems you've had into touch. ;)

In my experience Gigabyte boards don't like Razer hardware. I think the sidewinder keyboard is also made by razer,  I may be wrong. I have a reclusa keyboard which doesn't work well with Gigabyte boards but works perfect on Asus boards.
