Thoroughly Confused

Thoroughly Confused
« on: December 31, 2010, 06:26:09 pm »
Several months ago I built a system with the GA-MA790XT-UD4P board.  The install was without incident, and the system has performed flawlessly since.  I have one HDD drive running in IDE mode and two DVD drives running in IDE mode.  I am planning to build another system with the GA-790XT-USB3 board.  It will have the above components.  I checked the driver disk on my present system, and that is the start of my confusion.

The disk shows that i have only the Realtek audio and LAN drivers installed.  I do not have SATA/RAID or South Bridge drivers installed.  Also, I see no mention of USB drivers, but my USB certainly works, and my system certainly works.

On the gigabyte website I see something called "Chipset AMD 33," and I have no idea what that is.  There is also a USB3 driver listed that I do not have in my driver disk, but the board has two USB3 ports.

I really do not know what drivers to install or how.  It obviously was very simple with the first system, but I am really confused now.

Hi,

the drivers you need will depend on your system configuration and operating system but as a starting point I would suggest you need the following if you are running Windows:

Realtek Function driver for Realtek Azalia audio chip - For the On-board Audio. If you are using a 3rd Party Soundcard you won't need these drivers and you can safely disable the On-board Audio in BIOS

AMD Chipset Driver - This will install the appropriate drivers for your Motherboard's chipsets (Northbridge and Southbridge) if needed.

Realtek LAN Driver - This is for the LAN connector and is needed for connecting to a network and/or the Internet

NEC USB 3.0 Driver - You need this if you want to use the full capabilities of the USB3 ports on your motherboard. By default they will operate as USB2.0 so they will seem to be working but, if you attach a USB3 device without having installed the drivers it will not work at full speed.

A Linux based OS will need the same drivers, but you would need to go to AMD, Realtek and NEC websites to find the appropriate Linux drivers needed.

Remember, when all else fails a cup of tea and a good swear will often help! It won't solve the problem but it will make you feel better.
