Linux Ubuntu Ver. 10-10 ( latest) does not see Hdd
« on: January 08, 2011, 06:02:24 pm »
 ???
Hi All,
Gigabyte GA-X58A-UD3R, Rev 2.0
Intel i7 quad 4 at 3.06 mhz
4 gb DDR 2 at 1066 mhz.
WD 1tb Hdd.

I cannot install Linux Ubuntu 10-20 on this Hdd WD Cavier itb, running under AHCI intgerface, and Sata 3- 6gb, Marvell controlller.
Windows 7 is already installed running fine.  Full version.  Hdd is partitioned in half 495 gb.   Ubuntu does not see Hdd.
I have another Hdd exactly the same Wd, Cavier 1tb. Spliit same,  Running under IDE asnd Sata 2 (3gb) that sees and installls both WinXp and Ubuntu 10-10. It appears that Linux does not have proper files for the AHCI interface or no support for 1 tb drive, but of course that is my guess.
I downloaded yesterday another copy of Ubuntu as burned to cd, hoping a new kernel had been built into it but no differant when I get to partitioning it does not see the drive.
If I need a new kernel, what version and how do I incorporate it into install and where do I get and store so I can load it??

As they used to say, this is a doozy.   Any Guru's able to help??  EdWh.

I have solved my problem.   The sata 3 Marvell controller drivers are not in Ubuntu 10-10 Kernel so Ubuntu will not load.   I ended up connecting the drive to the sata 2 (300gb) controllers and Ubuntu walked right on the drive with pre-partitioning using Acronis Disk Director.
Anyone who pays $200.00 for this board is being taken for a ride, the sata 3 ports are ineffective and actually run slower than the sata 2 (300gb) ports which are controlled by the Intel  ICH10R controller.  I ran it under the sata 3 Marvell ports with Win7 and could see no difference than runnng as now under the sata 2 (300gb) ports.   In my opionion Gigabyte is mis-advertising the facts on this board and if you try to install Win XP Pro on the sata 3 Marvell ports, unless you have a clean copy of XP Pro with Sp3 integrated it will not install.  But it will on the sata 2 ports controlled by Intel.   Save your money.    EdWh    My problem is solved and I am extremely dis-satisfied.     EdWh   :'(

Hi
First, the fact that Ubuntu/kernel does not have USB3 Marvel module installed is not Gigabytes fault..
However if USB3 is no faster than USB2 that is misleading advertising if they knew it at the time they sold them ..(my opinion)
BTW I also have a USB3 board and also run Ubuntu Mandriva,Linux Mint..
Your information is very useful to me..

AS jolphil said it is an ongoing problem not only with Gigabyte but a lot of manufacturers, that they rush out these new boards without thoroughly testing them first and as with the Marvell fiasco with supposed SATA3 speeds that many of us bought into only to find that it was pure hype. This is the problem with being at the forefront of technology.
