GA-890FX-UD5 Phenom II 1090T memory error

GA-890FX-UD5 Phenom II 1090T memory error
« on: January 20, 2011, 11:14:46 am »
Hi, looking for some help please on this.
Got this board GA-890FX-UD5 rev2.0 and 16GB OCZ3G1333LV8GK (4x4GB) DIMMS.

Running memtest+ 4.1, and I find that around 7.6GB address on a single address I get a error in the test 8 random pattern, for one bit. It is only on one address. I swapped the DIMMS around and still get the single error around that region and only in test 8. I kept 2 DIMMS in and the same result.
The error rate is somewhere around 2/10 to 5/80 passes. So it is not consistent. I am using the settings I got from OCZ and tried the default settings from the board. The board is flashed to F6 (F3 also had the error).

I have yet to try the 2 DIMMS in slots 3/4.
I haven't got any other DIMMS to try yet, or board yet (soon).

Anyone give me some guidance as to what might be causing the problem. The board is on the bench, with a video card and USB CDROM for testing at the moment.

Thanks

Hi onestar,
Welcome to the forum
You are going about it in my opinion the correct way..I will offer my thoughts to help you although I am not a guru..
First thing I would check is to see if all the temperatures are  reasonable..This includes the CPU as well as the Northbridge temps.
Over heating is suspect to random problems..
I would then remove all sticks of memory except one..Run memtest multiple times with each stick in the same slot..I know it would take a long time but that's how I found out I had a defective stick.. If all test good, run a pair and check memtest again until you have all sticks
working..
Lastly if you still have problems and want to report it,please do so as the users and moderators will stick with you until you get it going..
Good Luck,
jolphil

Im running 8 gigs all slots filled at 1600 with respectable timings. I have found that with the more ram you use the more the memory controller on the chip has to work hard. Sometime a slight voltage increase in the ram or northbridge will help.

When i first went to 8 gigs from 4 gigs it took me a total of about a month to get 4 sticks that actually played together well.  First two second sets i sent back under rma because of the strange errors i was getting.  Gave up then about 3 months latter tried again and they worked well in my system.

I know amd has an onchip memory controller it might be you are stressing it to far try to make sure you start at default of 1333 then loosen your timings up a tad and try memtest again. If all goes well you can slowly go higher until you find what works or you may have a bad stick or two.

If you are like me it gets fraustrating all the taking in and out to test it all but if you want to get it working it what you have to do. Does it crash during gaming or any applications other than memtest?

This is probably something you want to post on the OCZ user forum.

I spent a week with an OCZ rep getting my configuration straight. It turns out some of the OCZ memories are already over-clocked and very demanding in what settings work (and which do not).

Right more tests

OCZ DIMMS, 1st pair,  in sockets 1/2 - error at 7.6GB address
OCZ DIMMS, 2nd pair,  in sockets 1/2 - error at 7.6GB address
OCZ DIMMS 1st pair in sockets 3/4 - error at 7.6GB address
4 DIMMS in 4 sockets - error at 7.6GB
swap around the pairs - error at 7.6GB

So tried OCZ DIMMS and the same CPU in a GA-890GA-UD3 board - no errors after 24hours.

So now trying Kingston 1.5v 16GB Dimms in original 890FX board, so far no error (though tests are running, 3 full clean passes so far).

If these work - I don't understand where the problem is. I was expecting the board to be the problem, now just puzzled.

Any advice ? Can it be simply down to a bad combination? or is something really bad?

Any ideas ?

------

Just seen the new replies.

Good point, I did try putting the memory speed down to 1067, but the timings went to 8-8-8 from 9-9-9. I should try some more combinations.

Also I did try the recommended (by OCZ) NB voltage of 1.35 and DRAM to 1.65. Should I try higher too?

I agree with you the first set makes it look like the board is the problem. Let us know how the second pair do if they pass then you know its the ram.

Firstly don't try increasing your voltages futher than you have done. You are pretty much at the top for the memory voltage especially.

Your problem could be a case of incompatibility between the memory and the motherboard. You should always check for that before purchasing them.

Hi, I started again today, and have to own up to stupidity on my part. :-[

I redid the testing on the 890FXA board.
I narrowed down the problem to one DIMM. I had forgotten about interleaving, so swapping the dimms around wouldn't have put the error at 15G vs 7G.

The DIMM is probably marginal or intermittent, since it is not a hard failure, but does have errors.
It seemed to work in the 890GPA board.

I did try increasing the voltages of the different parts, also increased the timings, but it had no effect. The other 3 DIMMS work fine without any issues in the FXA board (so far)

So will try to RMA with OCZ.

Thanks to all

Don't forget if you purchased them as a matching kit they must be returned for RMA all togther too.
