GA890GPA-UD3h can't hibernate
« on: January 26, 2011, 02:36:57 pm »
Spent the last couple of weeks setting up a new system, and now that it's stable, I thought I'd try hibernating it.

Doesn't work!  Screen goes dark, but the PC stays on.

PC hibernated fine when using the older ASUS mobo -- I know, hibernation is hardware-related.  But I thought I'd mention that in case someone says the check my settings.  I migrated the old Win7 install by plugging in the same hard drive to this new PC setup.  Didn't change any of the settings.

Have an older BIOS (original version), but didn't see anything in the BIOS update descriptions that mention hibernation.

So, is this a known problem with this board?

BTW, I'm not using any add-on cards, and have only installed the drivers that came on the CD.  Am running Win7 32-bit Pro.

Hi

Are you saying that you are still using the original Windows setup on your old hard drive from the previous build?

Basically, yes.  I plugged the old drive into the new Mobo port and booted Win7.  I then stuck the Gigabyte CD into the optical drive, it autoran, and installed a bunch of drivers.  When I rebooted, I had to reactive Win7 over the Internet -- but all was good after that.

But now, with this new setup, hibernate no longer works.  The screens go dark, but the PC stays on.

Not a really big problem -- seeing how fast the new machine boots -- but would like to be able to hibernate the PC rather than reboot it every day.

You really should format thre drive and do a fresh install of Windows OS. You are asking for trouble running it like that. It is always best to reinstall Windows after any major upgrade.

Yeah ... I know a clean install is always the "best" route ... but I was trying to avoid reinstalling all the apps I've accumulated over the past several years.

Sadly, trying to run a previous install on a new motherboard is very rarely successful and the problems you are enocountering are endemic from such a situation.

The only way that you will be able to find out if the problem is hardware based is to do a clean re-install of your OS.  :'(

Hi,
I agree with both comments that a fresh install is best ..I have heard of and actually performed  a non-destruct repair on windows XP and it worked perfectly( My wifes machine with tons of software she did not want to lose)..I understand it can be done but never tried that on a Win7machine...
If you are serious about saving all your stuff I suggest you goggle "windows7 non destruct repair" It will load all new system files and get it back to almost fresh installed condition but with all your software and even your desktop..You might have to reactivate and or update.
Note this should be on retail versions only not OEM's..I am not sure but the EULA states OEM's  are for one machine only..I may be corrected on this point..
Goodluck, :)

Even if you don't want to repair it ,it is an interesting read... ;)

Thanks for all the feedback folks ...

I'm going to "bite the bullet" and do a clean install -- once I get finished making note of everything I still use, copy off the settings, and find all the installation sources.

Actually, since this will be a clean install, I might just experiment with installing Win7 Pro 64-bit.  I will most probably have to reactivate anyway, and if the 64-bit version works OK, then I can use more then 4GB of RAM.

I've actually found that the 64 bit version of Windows is really solid.
Unless you are running some really old 32 bit programmes then you should have no issues.
You will have to reactivate Windows but you don't have to do it straight away. If you are concerned about running the 64 Bit version of Windows why not take the opportunity to experiment with it and if you find that you do have programmes that you can't run on it revert back to the 32 bit version (this will mean another install) and then activate.

OK folks ... your miracle cure of clean-install did NOT work.

I grabbed a drive, installed Win7 64-bit afresh.  Installed the drivers from the Giagbyte CD.

Then set up hibernate.

DOES NOT WORK!  Same as the non-clean-installed 32-bit version.  Screens go dark.  PC does NOT turn off.

Hate to say it, but I'm regretting my decision to move to Gigabyte products.  Only a few days now, and already, three problems using this motherboard!

No, it's not the latest.  Guess that's the next thing I need to attempt -- flashing the BIOS.

Yes I would advise that. Make sure that you do it via QFlash not @BIOS and disable the Keep DMI Data on the QFLash homescreen before proceeding with the update.

OK ... bit the bullet and upated the BIOS to FF.

Tried hibernate again.  Looks like it's trying to write stuff to the drive.  Drive activity light is busy for a while.  But the PC never turns off.  Only the screens go dark.

When I hibernate on my laptop, it takes a couple of minutes to shut down.

So, I waited nearly 10 minuts.  Still lots of disk activity, but the PC never shut down.

Any other suggestions?
