Right - to answer some of the points above:
It is not a new build, I've had it since Dec '09
It's a custom-build by Cyberpower Systems UK and I found the spec from my order sheet which is as follows:

I have added
4GB of OCZ Gold DDR3 RAM
Creative Soundblaster Audigy 4 Pro soundcard
I overclocked the CPU to around 3.3GHz and overclocked the graphics card (but I forget by how much now). The RAM is not overclocked.
The mobo drivers were already up and running when I received the machine and so far as I know they are up to date. I have not installed any Gigabyte utilities (and I probably can't remember where the CD's are so would need to download any utilities).
None of the USB sockets (front or back) will allow any hub to be connected (always getting a Code 28 error in windows). The rear sockets have two WD 1TB external HD's attached (which work fine), a Digidesign Mbox (again, no problems), a Logitech wireless mouse receiver and an Xbox wireless receiver. There's spare USB back there too.
On the front, I use the two sockets generally for mp3 player, pen-drives etc with no issues.
The OS is genuine and up to date
Re: enabling in BIOS - erm ...? I think so but I'm pretty much a newbie so I could easily have got it wrong or missed something.
The problem came to light when I first got my Razr Reclusa keyboard, which always worked during POST and up to the point that Windows started (as in the backlight on the keys was on) but from the login screen onwards, no joy. As a result, I assumed it was a driver issue and tried to troubleshoot, boot in safe mode, manually install the driver etc, checked it wasn't a 32/64-bit issue. I went onto the Microsoft Answers website and had a bit of a rant (it's a Microsoft branded keyboard which didn't work with a Microsoft OS and I was quite frustrated). Nothing worked so I packed it away and was going to return it to the retailer. Then, for unrelated reasons, I had to do a reinstall of my OS and woo-hoo! it worked.
About a week later, I left the machine on overnight and when I returned the keys were dark and there was no num lock light on. On reboot I was back to square one.
I assumed during this period that it was the keyboard at fault but when messing with the drivers it seemed to mention an unrecognised USB hub (the keyboard has a couple of pointless USB 1.1 sockets on it). This raised my suspicions so I tried plugging in the [don't laugh] R2D2 USB hub my sister gave me and lo and behold, same error and lack of driver.
So, this is suspicion and supposition on my part but the fact that the keyboard works fine on my wife's computer (same OS), as does the hub, kind of lets Microsoft off the hook. As the fault reoccurred after the machine had been on for a prolonged period I guessed it was some power issue with the mainboard. I tried to see if the USB controller on the mobo was updatable, assuming it was made by a 3rd party but I was soon out of my depth so gave upon that.
The power settings I use in Windows are 'Always On' btw. I don't trust that sleeping stuff.
I don't actually need a USB in particular but the keyboard issue REALLY bugs me and I'd love to get it sorted.
Again, anticipated thanks and thanks for replying above and taking an interest, you guys.
