GA-X58A-UD9 Hot Swap Problem

GA-X58A-UD9 Hot Swap Problem
« on: February 16, 2011, 02:07:17 pm »
Do I have a problem or not?  :-\

My bottom hot swap bay is connected to SATA2_5 (SATA2_0-5 have been set to RAID in the BIOS) but the drive is not being listed under “Safely Remove Hardware and Eject Media”. It is being shown using the “Intel Rapid Storage Technology” in the Storage System View window of the Status button.

Is this normal or have I not set something in the BIOS correctly?

I was under the impression that AHCI to enable hot swap to work was supposed to function when RAID is selected and therefore show the drive under “Safely Remove Hardware and Eject Media” allowing it to be safely removed.

My BIOS Settings are:
eXtreme Hard Drive (XHD) [Disabled]
ICH SATA Control Mode [RAID(XHD)]
SATA Port0-3 Native Mode [Enabled]
eSATA Controller [Enabled]
eSATA Ctrl Mode [AHCI]
GSATA 6_7/IDE Controller [Enabled]
GSATA 6_7/IDE Ctrl Mode [IDE]
GSATA3 RAID Mode Control [Fw Mode]
GSATA3 RAID Configuration [Press Enter]
SATA3 Firmware Selection [Auto]
GSATA 8_9/IDE Controller [Enabled]
GSATA 8_9/IDE Ctrl Mode [AHCI]

On starting my PC the screen shows:

Please wait. This will take few seconds.

To me it looks as though AHCI is not functioning. Is there a way to set Port-05 to AHCI? Or have I misunderstood something about RAID/AHCI?

Any help to solve this problem or to make me better understand what is happening would be greatly appreciated.

Hi this has come up before especially if you are running Windows 7.

You might want to check through this thread as it might be of some help: http://forum.giga-byte.co.uk/index.php/topic,4119.msg31994.html#msg31994

Hi and welcome to the Gigabyte Forum.

Sorry for the delay in answering but I saw that absic had aready posted.

I would suggest updating the Matrix Storage driver to the Intel Rapid Storage Technology driver as it is more efficient.

Sorry for being so long in replying but I have been looking a bit deeper into my problem to try and understand things a little more only to find that I think I have confused myself.  :'(

Hi this has come up before especially if you are running Windows 7.

Yes, I am running Windows 7 Ultimate 64bit.

Also, thanks for the link it made for interesting reading. But to me it looks as though they are talking about “internal hard disk drives are listed under safely remove hardware” whereas my problem is the exact opposite – one hot swap drive connected to the ICH10R controller is not being listed and it should be.

Hi and welcome to the Gigabyte Forum.

Sorry for the delay in answering but I saw that absic had aready posted.

I would suggest updating the Matrix Storage driver to the Intel Rapid Storage Technology driver as it is more efficient.

I presume this has already been done as I currently have the following entries under Device Manager/Storage controllers:
  • GIGABYTE GBB36X Controller – Driver JMicron Technology Corp., Location PCI bus 12, device 0, function 0. Version 1.17.55.0 in C:\Windows\system32\DRIVERS\jraid.sys
  • GIGABYTE GBB36X Controller – Driver JMicron Technology Corp., Location PCI bus 13, device 0, function 0. Version 1.17.55.0 in C:\Windows\system32\DRIVERS\jraid.sys
  • Inter® Desktop/Workstation/Server Express Chipset SATA RAID Controller – Driver Intel, Location PCI bus 0, device 31, function 2. Version 10.1.0.1008 in C:\Windows\system32\DRIVERS\iaStor.sys
If not, where do I look to see which driver has been loaded so that I can change it?
Also, how can I find out if the 64 bit version has been installed and not the 32 bit version?

What further confuses me a little is that the other hot swap drive appears to be fine as the drive is being listed under “Safely Remove Hardware and Eject Media” as WDC WD1002FAEX-00Z3A SCSI Disk Device - Hot Swap (G:). It is not being listed using the “Intel Rapid Storage Technology” in the Storage System View window of the Status button. This drive is connected to GSATA2_9 using the JMicron JMB362/GIGABYTE SATA2 controller (GSATA2_8 has the eSata front panel cable connected to it and GSTAT2_8-9 have been set to AHCI in the BIOS).

Should the hot swap drives be listed in both “Safely Remove Hardware and Eject Media” and “Intel Rapid Storage Technology”?

I am also now wondering if I created a problem (that's if one exists) because I installed the following immediately after installing Windows:
Realtek LAN Driver: Version 7.036: (Install_Win7_7036_12272010\setup.exe)
      Marvell Console Driver (SATA3): Version 1.0.0.1027: (NoDRV\drvSetup.exe)
      NEC USB 3.0 Driver: Version 2.0.30.0: (usb3\setup.exe)
Intel SATA RAID Driver: Version 10.1.0.1008: (IRST\iata_cd.exe)
      Gigabyte SATA2 Driver: Version 1.17.59.0: (GSATA\setup.exe)
Realtek Function Driver: Version R2.52: (Realtek\setup.exe)
Intel INF installation: Version 9.1.2.1007: (INFUpdate\Setup.exe)
I then loaded the Gigabyte DVD and clicked on “Chipset Drivers” and then accidently clicked on the “Install All” instead of “Install Single Items” button.

I am quite willing to change the drive connections and reinstall Windows 7 Ultimate 64 bit if that's the best thing to do.

Many thanks for all your input so far but as you can probably gather, I'm getting a little bogged-down with all this - sometimes a little knowledge can be a dangerous and confusing thing. So any further help would be very much appreciated.
