GA-870A-UD3 (rev 2.1) - Mythbuntu 10.10 won't powerdown
« on: February 25, 2011, 08:41:33 am »
I'm running Mythbuntu 10.10 on a new build machine.

The system runs beautifully except for one slight hiccup - it won't powerdown correctly.

When shutting down I can hear the hard drives power down but the GPU and fans are still on.

If I choose a more verbose shutdown I can see Mythbuntu say "System halted" - so it doesn't look like the system is hanging during the shutdown process. It feels like the motherboard isn't responding to the shutdown signal it's being sent.

I've got version F2 of the BIOS - do you think that upgrading that to F4 (or even F5a - if the beta is stable enough) might fix this?

Open to any other suggestions too.

My full setup:
Motherboard: Gigabyte 870A-UD3 (rev 2.1)
CPU: AMD Athlon II X2 245e
CPU Cooler: Scythe Shuriken Rev B
GPU: MSI M210-ND512H
Memory: 4GB (4GB kit (2GBx2), 240-pin DIMM, DDR3 PC3-10600)
HD1: 160GB 7200rpm
HD2: 2TB 5400rpm
DVD: Sony dvd-rw
TV Tuner: Hauppauge Nova-T
PSU: Zalman ZM400-ST 400W

Hi there,

Like most motherboard manufacturers Gigabyte doesn't offer updates or drivers for Linux based distributions and points user's to other sources for these. Updating the BIOS might help with your shutdown problems but the only way of knowing for sure is to try it and see.

When a BIOS is shown as a BETA version in the download list it is usually solid and there are many instances where a BETA BIOS is never updated further so there is normally no problems when running one. Of course, one advantage of using QFlash to update your BIOS is that you can also go backwards, to an earlier version, if you so desire.

I think, if I were facing your situation I would update to the next BIOS, F3 and see if that solves the problem. If it doesn't I would then go to F4 and if still no luck then F5a. I'm afraid it is really a case of suck it and see and of course, the problem might not actually be with the hardware but with the software.

Thanks absic.

I fully appreciate that it may be the software (and have posted a bug report with the developers). I'm just keen to keep all options open.

In the meantime, I will try your approach.

sorry I can't be more help but I don't actually use any of the Linux Distro's, although I play around with them for testing purposes.

Hopefully, another user with your motherboard and who is actually running a version of Linux will come along and offer some first hand advice.

Hi FYI
I have the the GA-870A-UD3 MB ver 2.0 with F4 BIOS and do use Ubuntu 10.10 and it does shut down properly on my desktop box..
I am not familiar with Mithbuntu but will look into it.. Possibly some ACPI configuration?
jolphil
PS I too think the BIOS upgrade would be a good bet as a first step..

Have updated BIOS to F4. Still not powering down.

ACPI settings do seem a likely candidate - could you let me know your power settings in your BIOS (I've pretty much got everything disabled at the moment).

I might also try a LiveCD of Ubuntu 10.10 and see how that goes.

Thanks for the BIOS settings - these look the same as mine.

Sadly, the BIOS upgrade didn't work (although the board did happily power down at the end of the actual BIOS upgrade process!)

I also tried the LiveCD for ubuntu 10.10 - that didn't shutdown either.

Not sure what's left to try:
- GPU?
- Kernel boot options? I've tried lots of these with no success (Jolphil, what kernel are you running? Do you have any custom boot options e.g. "acpi=force etc.")

Lastly, Jolphil, I have no intention of taking up much of your time in debugging this - I've exhausted the suggestions on Ubuntuforums and filed a bug with the developers so you don't need to go out of your way to do any more!

Thanks.

No problem with bugging me..First I use no boot options...and here is the kernel...

Linux amd1090t 2.6.35-25-generic-pae #44-Ubuntu SMP Fri Jan 21 19:01:46 UTC 2011 i686 GNU/Linux

Sorry you are having problems..
If I was to make a guess it does look like some hardware problem..
B4 you give up the ghost, I would suggest you install and configure lm sensors
and configure it to read all your temperatures and voltages/fan speed..

Does the Non-shutdown only exist in Linux/?
I was thinking possibly a Power supply problem if it is a problem on all operating systems..
Anyway.....
Good Luck,
jolphil

Edit: I forgot to mention that my North Bridge reads high..78C but system so far is stable...

I have the same system. And my mobo NB is 81C  :o

Try to install windows, and see if windows power down correctly. If so, it its Linux and not the mobo

I use Ubuntu 10.10 and Windows7 in dual-bot. No power down problem under linux

Ok - so I think we've got the same Kernel.  Mine is Ubuntu 2.6.35-25.44-generic-pae 2.6.35.10.

Hardware - shouldn't be PSU as I've just got a new one (and the board powers down from BIOS).

Could be the GPU - I've got an old one I could try.

I've got lm-sensors installed but whenever I run it I just get "temp1" and nothing else - I've no idea what temperature this is referring to (but whatever it is, it's 21 degrees)! The sensors-detect asks if I want to add "it87" to my modules, but I haven't yet (as the default answer is no) - should I?

Also, I don't have a windows CD, and I'm not keen on a dual boot even if it's only temporary. I might roll back a few releases of Ubuntu and try, say, a 9.10 LiveCD.

I am not an expert on lm sensors but managed to get it working by following online instructions..
You can google or go here http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=2780
for help..This shows how to install then configure thus you should not need the first part..

Sounds like a plan to me..
I do not dual boot but switch hard drives with a removable HD rack but  La7gla does and his apparently is working..
I am still leaning to some sort of a hardware problem..I have read posts from both absic and Dark Mantis and they suggested
removing the motherboard from the case to eliminate any possibility of a case short..Could be worth a try..

Good Luck

Hi again,
After searching online I found your post on the U Forum..I notice much more detail there..There are some differences ..
First I have rev 2.0 board with (F4 BIOS) where as you have 2.1 and I think F4 BIOS..
I use a PS/2 keyboard..Yours???
I have only one SATA HD  set to Native IDE set as Master on port 5  Yours ???
I am not sure but do you have a Hauppauge card?  I do not have that either..
You are correct about one thing..I too would not know a kernel error if it was staring me in the face.. ;D
Can you start removing all things  back to basics with a live CD to see if anything works..
I would do that B4 even removing the MB from the case..
jolphil :)
