GA-870A-UD3 (rev 2.1) - Mythbuntu 10.10 won't powerdown

Ok - some good news:

I've got it to powerdown from Mythbuntu 10.10!!

However, that's come at a cost - I had to disable the second core on my Athlon 245e.

So, any ideas where I go from here?

That is weird..Is it a bad CPU? or a series of glitches in the Gigabyte BIOS,  or in the Ubuntu software?
One way to rule out the Ubuntu side of it is to download and burn an .ISO of Mandriva One live CD..
That is completely different from Ubuntu/Mythbuntu..
If that shuts down properly with both cores then that rules out Mother board and CPU and just leaves Ubuntu as the culprit..
Any way thats just a suggestion easy to try and painless..If you do not want to try Mandriva One, then there is always Puppy Linux..

It gets weirder...

I'd left the machine on overnight as it was recording some programmes.

Tried to powerdown and it hung as before.

Out of curiosity I then rebooted and tried powering down instantly - and that worked without a hitch.

I'm baffled by this.


I'll also try Mandriva or Puppy tonight.

I never found out if you had a Hauppage TV card or not..Is that what you used for recording?
The reason I asked was concern that this may be the reason for the shut-down problems..
Well like you said you will try either Mandriva One or puppy to see what that results are..
Then It might be a good ides to remove the TV card(if there is one used) and try it again for shut-down.
We are running out of possibilities here..

Yes - I do have a Haupaugge Nova-T PCI card.

I'd be surprised if this was the case as it functioned beautifully in Mythbuntu 9.04 (running on a very old Dell Dimension).

I'm leaning to some ACPI issue because, when the machine was running overnight, I assume some sort of power saving mode will have kicked in.

That or the GPU...

You were right!

It's the TV tuner - I found some irq errors when the shutdown was hanging.

I removed the tuner, enabled both cores and it powered down beautifully.

I'll carry this on on the ubuntuforums site to see if they've got any tips.

Edit: after thinking a bit perhaps absic , Dark Mantis  or even Gigabyte can explain why this BIOS is showing a irq error but the old BOIS did not..I would think there should be a way to work around this issue..

A quick update:

I haven't resolved the shutdwon issue as I need to keep the TV card there (wouldn't be much of a PVR without it!).

However, I have found that it powers down perfectly using either suspend or hibernate.

What's more, I can also set a wakealarm and the machine will reboot nicely.

So all in all, I'm pretty happy.
