I was just suggesting trying a different mouse as a  faultfinding technique not a long term remedy.

:D ah! but if it works then what do I do  ;)

Just did a little Googling and found this MS page that has similarities (just) ~ now I use two accounts the "master" admin which I only access as needed but for everyday stuff I have an UAC setup and indeed can still install software and make chnages by when W7 asks put my Admin password in, so I am not changing accounts as discussed on that fora here http://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/forum/windows_7-hardware/mouse-and-keyboard-freeze-after-switching-user/080ab7df-7014-42f8-89a5-e5fda945460b so maybe it is a W7 question.......but what is it!!!!!

I take it that you do have it plugged intop the back I/O panel on the computer ? Sorry if I have asked before.

Regarding the use of an ordinary mouse, if it works then at least we have some more information to go on.

Yes, Trackball plugged into one of the I/O panel USB ports and the KB into the PS2 port.

I will get a USB mouse later in the week in readiness  ;)

Just an interim update.

Yet to get a plain mouse but did update as mentioned the Intellipoint software and also the graphics drivers.  But have had it happen twice in the past 3 days ~ grrr!

Hi DM

It is the sheer unpredictability of it and AFAIK there is not log I can exmamine to 'see' what the trigger event might be???  As previously mentioned it mostly has happened whilst away from the PC but once occurred whilst browsing with IE8 and about 8 or 9 tabs open.

Simply thinking out loud ~ empirical tests a) run the PC but with zero running i.e. just turn it on for the day and see what happens?  b) use Firefox in case it is somehow linked IE8

Neither scenario is that great because it does not happen every day :bangs_head_against_wall:

Another update FWIW  ???

System has behaved itself for many days but in the past 36hours has happened 3 times the last one a short while ago and this time the LEDs were on in the Trackball......never seen that before with the screensaver frozen and as before the keyboard equally frozen.

I did the reset button and it did not respond.....very odd thinks I, so hit it again and it took a couple of seconds to act but again oddly.  Normally the reset button triggers the reboot almost instantaneously but this time it took approx 2-3 seconds!!!!

Aren't computers fun  ::)

FWIW I would suggest not using the Reset button but go for a hard shutdown. It is kinder on the computer and doesn't have all the problems inherrant with the reset button.

Ah! now I was not aware of such a difference between the two methods of a hard reboot???

On the whole it is far better to just use the power button to shut down if the computer is locked up. Using the reset can cause problems like muliple rebooting and issues with the CMOS etc.

Evening DM et al

Just needed to post an update.

The issue has persisted randomly and because thankfully it is not too frequent I forgot to get another vanilla mouse to eliminate the Trackball  ???

However the reason for the posting now was that it happened again this afternoon but a new thing was that all the fans which with the exception of the CPU fan which is connected to its header are direct wired to the PSU (fan controller is on the shopping list for the future) all were running at very noisy speed ~ almost as if they were running over-volted so to speak!

It was not obviously to me the CPU fan as well but the various case fans only?

Could my issues be something to do with the PSU is some odd way???

I have had the same thing happen and the only way I cured it was by an extended clear of the CMOS. Nothing else would seem to make any effect.

Remove the power cable from the mains supply and then press the power switch on the case for a few seconds just to drain any residual energy in the PSU capacitors.

Once done remove the motherboard battery for at least one hour before replacing it.

Next plug back into the mains supply and boot.

You will now need to enter the BIOS by pressing DEL and load Optimised BIOS Defaults.

Make any other changes to the BIOS settings to suit your self like disabling the floppy drive, disabling the full screen logo and making the HDD the primary boot device and then press F10 to save and exit.

Hi DM

When you say you had the same thing happen are you refering to the 'go to sleep' issue i.e. you have experienced that ;) Or just the apparent over-volt running of the PSU connected case fans???

TIA :)

Hello Searcher1,

Your previous posts suggest the you are you using a screensaver of somekind. Recommend that you disable it to see if it helps resolve the problem. Leave it off there thereafter modern day LCD screens no longer need saving. Double check that you have actioned DM's request and disabled all power and sleep options in both BIOS and Windows. Also do not delay and get a vanilla mouse so that you can assess your track ball device status. Get a cheap USB keyboard while your there to see if your PS2 keyboard maybe the cause. Both of these devices will come handy for future fault analysis.

Do not overfocus on your trackball just yet, remember that your keyboard and screen have also locked up. Software applications can sometimes call for an unavailable request and go into a never ending wait or search loop while commanding 100% of CPU usage. This fault does not normally trigger an auto Windows Restart as a system failure would since Windows thinks that all is well. Meanwhile all of your other devices are denied access to the CPU and appear to be locked.

Here is how to access and read the system log files :

1- Simultaneously press the "Windows" key and the letter "R" to open Run command window
2- In the open input line type in "eventvwr" and click OK
3- Open the folder tree under "Custom Views" and highlight "Administrative Events"
4- Look at the "Date & Time column" and focus on the time period where the unwanted event(s) occurred and then select them one at a time.
5- Use the info depicted in the lower window to gain insights - view both general and Details tabs.
6- Use the info gained at step 5 to to troubleshoot your system or select a specific error log in another more specific folders/logs available to you in log viewer.

Good Luck,
