Reboot problems 870A-UD3

I have contacted tech support they have no idea what the problem might be so I hope some one her has a sollution.  When I restart my pc from either windoze or from the bios it detects all the drives correctly and then freezes on the post page with F9, F12 etc at the bottom.  However if I then power down and then power back up it boots fine?  I have even reinstalled windoze, but as I explained to tech I very much doubt that it is a windoze problem as the bootstrap has not even loaded, tech seem to think it may be a faulty board but I am not convinced.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Hi there,

could you post back with your full system components as you haven't given us much to go on?

Also what revision is your motherboard, what BIOS are you running and what version of Windows are you trying to install?

Sorry, yes

I am running a fresh install of Windoze 7 64Bit SP1

Mobo rev 2.2
Bios Ver F5A but this problem also occured whilst using  F4
Ram 8gb Crucial Balistics DDR3 1333Mhz CL7
Cpu AMD Phenom II X4 955 Black Edition Socket AM3 3.2 GHz
Graphics 2x Saphire ATi Radeon HD4850 512Mb in Crossfire Mode
Hdd's;
Primary: Western Digital WD20EARS 2TB
Seconday: Samsung - SpinPoint HD103UJ F1 1TB
Optical Drives;
Primary: Samsung SH-S223 22x DVD±RW DL & RAM SATA
Secondary: Liteon iHAS220

All running on an 850w PSU
In a  thermaltake V9 case

I have made no adjustment to the settings in the Bios appart from telling it which drive to boot from.

Hi again,

at first glance looking through your specs, I would suspect your choice of primary HDD. It is a Western Digital "Green Disk and these are really better suited as a storage drive rather than a boot one.

If you haven't gone too far down the road I would advise that you change your HDD's around and use the Spinpoint as your Primary Boot drive and install the OS onto that and see if the problem persists.

Another thing to do would be to run MemTest to check your RAM Modules (if you haven't already done so) as faulty RAM can also lead to the system hanging.

Thanks for the help, I have done memtest all check out fine, as for the primary drive it was installed in another machine and would reboot happily. I am now officially lost.

Try turning off all the power saving modes in the BIOS and do as absic suggests as the Green drives ar etoo slow and keep trying to power down to be used reliably for a boot drive.

I'll give it a go, just need a 2tb drive to boot if this one is the problem, I will stick it in my NAS and get a Barracuda 2tb.  Anyone suggest a quick and reliable 2tb boot drive?

Personally I wouldn't use a 2 TB HDD as a boot device but here are a couple that should be OK.

I don't mean to sound rude but why not use a 2 TB HDD as a primary boot drive?

Not being rude at all by asking. It is really one of personal preference and also of experience.

I have always tried to keep my primary BOOT device to a relatively small size so that it doesn't become clogged with lots of files and  I feel that a smaller drive for the OS is easier to maintain and keep from slowing up due to too many fragmented files and the bits that don't always get removed when you install programmes etc.

Over the years I have always used a smaller drive for the OS and larger drives for extra storage. My system stays sharp and responsive (unlike some of my friend's PC's) and if I have to reinstall the OS due to a problem it is fairly painless as I don't lose, or have to move  lots of other files (photos, music, documents et al) which you need to do if you store everything on the Primary drive. Just consider how much information you would lose if you have a Primary Disk Failure and everything is being held there.

Yes I feel the same way. Keep a small fast drive for booting and then use a bigger drive for data storage. It has lots of benefits doing it this way.

Well I got a 64gb SSD drive it is a OCZ Vertex 2 and guess what, it did not solve the problem.  I am now at my wits end.  GB say that the memory is compatible and so are the drives.  I must have a dodgy board.

I would suggest striping the board down and remove everthing off it except for the PSU, CPU/heatsink/fan, one stick of memory in the first slot, boot drive and the graphics card. Now try and boot up and see what happens.

I am having the same problem.  I have two OCZ Vertex 3 240GB SSD drives and when I reboot from Windows 7 64 Pro or from the BIOS the drives do not seem to initialize.   I have tried moving the drives to different ports on the AMD controller.  Nothing I do seems to correct the problem.  I built this system for a client and I cannot give this to them with this problem.   When I do a cold boot it works fine.  I am running them in RAID 0.  I tried to connect them in RAID 0 on the GSATA controller but they were not detected so I put them back on the AMD controller.  HELP!!!
