How to enable triple USB charging power on my Gigabyte GA-P67A-UD3-B3?

Hi all!

Just a quick couple of questions:

How to enable triple USB charging power on my Gigabyte GA-P67A-UD3-B3?  Is it always on?  Does it require extra software installation [I hope not]?

Also, will I be able to access the triple charging power ability on my HAF 932 USB front header after hooking it up to mobo?

Thanks,

It's me,

Allan,

Gigabyte appears to claim X3 power...

But I just found a website that claims it is much, much more!  And I quote:

"In general, a USB 2.0 hub port has a current limitation of 500mA, but GIGABYTE motherboards equipped with 3x USB Power supply are able to provide 1.5A for each USB 2.0 port. Additionally, USB 3.0 hub ports Moreover the USB3.0 hub port can even provide up to 2.7A of power for USB 3.0 devices.

The 12 USB 2.0 ports on a GIGABYTE motherboard can provide a total of 18A of power and the 2 USB3.0 ports are able to provide a total of 5.4A of power. This means that a GIGABYTE 3x Power designed motherboard are able to deliver a total of 23.4A of power. "

That sounds crazy!  The guy even shows demo'ing USB footwarmers, fans, cup heating plate, etc. under the moonlight in freezing temperatures.   I think he flipped his Gigabyte lid and lost some marbles [I hope it is not DM or Absic, poor souls...they say mental problems can occur if people think too hard and long on Gigabyte products]!

You can find the test site here:

http://gigabyte.com/microsite/239/3x-usb-power.html

Anyway, I still cannot find how to enable these features or if they are automatically enabled....

DM, Absic....are you two ok?  Are all the marbles still in the same jar?  We hope and pray the guys in the white jackets didn't arrive and cart you too off to the funny farm!

Remember....too much intense, prolonged thought given to Gigabyte products can cause serious results!

I think we need to place a warning label on all Gigabyte products...esp. their mobo's!

It's me,

Allan,

My present PSU's [XFX 850 and XFX 650] are way over my present needs, so I figure it should be ok to super charge my wife's Ipod, phone, foot warmer, back message machine, cigarette lighter, USB fan, eye glass cleaner, nail trimmer, nose hair cutter, hearing aides, rocking chair motor, gas dissipating machine , etc.

What say you?

Soar, you have to download the driver for USB charging. It's worth it. You can charge devices without even having to turn the computer on. I don't think any other mobo mfg offers that.

I forget exactly which USB port on the mobo it is, it should say power on it somewhere. If that is the one connected to the front header it should power your devices.

Faizoff,

I thought all USB ports on the Gigabyte mobo's have the extra juice?

Am I mistaken?

From the user manual, page 32:

Quote
When the system is in S4/S5 mode, only the USB ports routed to the F_USB1 header can support the ON/OFF Charge function.

More here http://www.gigabyte.com/microsite/185/on-off-charge.htm

Based on GIGABYTE's unparalleled 3x USB power boost design, plus an entirely new hardware design, GIGABYTE ON/OFF Charge Technology provides a set of white and red colored USB pin headers that can easily be connected to your system's front USB 2.0 ports, that not only act as a normal USB port, but also double as a quick charge ports for your mobile device.
...
With a simple On/Off Charge driver update, GIGABYTE motherboard users are able to take full advantage of USB charging of their iPhone/iPad/iPod Touch, giving them more options and convenience when recharging their new device.
...
When you install the ON/OFF charge driver, please update the latest BIOS version for the best product efficiency.

So apparently not all USB ports support 3x power and you need special driver to make it work.

Nijel,

Thanks for the post and the info.  I will have to look to see if any on my headers on the Mobo has the red color. Also, I remember using the "software" for the extra power in a different Gigabyte mobo and it caused me nothing but problems!

Perhaps I will not use it...darn....I was hoping to make good use of it without the risk of problematic software....

It's not really software that you need to install as much as drivers. All I installed were the drivers and that was it.

Faizoff,

Last time I attempted to install the drivers/software, it caused huge problems for me with the sleep/start/shut down commodities. I think I was using the P55A-UD3 or the 890XA-UD3.  It caused so much trouble I had to remove it.

Did you install the drivers, and if yes, have you had any problems?

Also, which mobo are you using?

Thanks,

Soar
