GA-P55M-UD2: powers on, no boot

GA-P55M-UD2: powers on, no boot
« on: June 09, 2011, 11:26:13 pm »
Today I turned on my computer to find that the system would not go to BIOS. I have never had any problems with any of the components, and the computer's only seen about 6 months of use.

From what I can tell, all of the computer's LEDs and fans work except for the CPU fan, the PULSE_LEDs turn on -- 2 greens, 1 yellow, 1 red, and USB bus power still works from both sides of the motherboard (front and back), and disk drives turn on and off. But USB devices won't talk to the computer (e.g., the caps lock on my keyboard doesn't light, which leads me to think it hasn't been really connected to anything), and there is no signal going out to the monitor. I haven't activated the motherboard's speaker mechanism (and I don't think there's a way for me to do it), so it doesn't make any sounds indicating anything. Am I looking at a fried motherboard? There is no evidence of busted capacitors or anything. Is there anything else I can do, short of swapping out components (though I have taken out, for example, the RAM to see what would happen).

I've let the computer sit for a while, I've reset CMOS, and I've removed the motherboard battery per this forum's instructions.

My hardware: Intel i7 860, cooler master hyper 212+ cpu cooler, Intel SSD boot drive 80GB, two seagate 1TB drives, ATI GPU PCI-e, M-Audio audiophile sound card PCI, 4 x 2GB g.skill DDR3 Ram 1600, OCZ modxstream 700W PSU, antec 900 case

I would sincerely appreciate any input on this and will be on hand to give any more information that is necessary.

Hi and welcome to the Gigabyte Forum.

From what you say the CPU fan didn't initiate. If so that could be the problem as it could be faulty and as such would stop the CPU from overheating by cutting the power. So I think a test of that would be first on the list.

If that doesn't get you anywhere try following these instructions:

The next thing to try is to clear the CMOS.

Remove the power cable from the mains supply and then press the power switch on the case for a few seconds just to drain any residual energy in the PSU capacitors.

Once done remove the motherboard battery for at least one hour before replacing it.

Next plug back into the mains supply and boot.

You will now need to enter the BIOS by pressing DEL and load Optimised BIOS Defaults.

Make any other changes to the BIOS settings to suit your self like disabling the floppy drive, disabling the full screen logo and making the HDD the primary boot device and then press F10 to save and exit.

Dark Mantis,

Thank you for the quick reply.

I've tested the CPU fan, and it works when there's juice going into it. So it's not that. I've then cleared the CMOS using both methods (battery and two-pin jump). I still don't have access to the BIOS. Still nothing coming from the display, nor is there any indication that the keyboard or mouse is functional. I'm going to buy a case speaker to see if there are any beeps. Are there any other things anybody would recommend?

I don't know if you followed my directions there exactly but it is important. If that didn't work I would suggest doing it and leaving the battery out overnight. You will probably be thinking "what difference is that going to make " but trust me it does in a lot of cirumstances.

Thanks again. I did the overnight test, and still nothing. Short of doing an RMA on the motherboard and PSU, I'm fresh out of ideas. Still waiting for the case speaker to come in; maybe that'll give some insight.

Hi, i just created an account to post this.

I'm a 15 year old kid that had exactly the same problem, i came back from skating, started my custom-built computer and whoop :: monitor not responding, had tested it on 2 monitors; i had 2 green, 1 yellow and 1 red (or something like that) lights flashing on my P55M-UD2 ; no beep when starting (weird) ; didn't go into bios ; CPU fan initially stalled, but worked after a little push to the rotor blades ; ...

I read this thread and decided to drain the energy out of my motherboard, then pull out the battery, waited 20 min, put it back in:
initially, it solved the no-beep and weird lights on motherboard problem, but it didn't do anything else, however, after waiting 1 minute or so everything was back to normal out of nowhere !!

Thanks !

I hope i helped (doubt it though)

Just changed my MOBO a week ago but my CPU fan worked correctly. Everything seemed to work correctly just nothing attached to PC didn't come on.
I also tried to swap video card but still same problem so I ended up buying new MOBO co I did not see anymore options. Now I'm using same vid.card on new MOBO. So graphics can be tested just by swaping to another.
I tried all my components on another MOBO and they were fine.

Is it possible that there might be something wrong with BIOS? Have You flashed it lately?
My friend has also problem with one old MOBO, but thet problem apeared after he tried to flash board with new BIOS.
We tried his board with my components and had same effect - no booting of kayboard or mouse and monitor but everything seemed t owork OK by visual.

Srry to post a question here but maybe it would help You to .... Does anybody know can the BIOS some how be reset after flashed with wrong one or something just went bad?
Edit: Old board does not have dual bios and is not Gigabyte board.

Hi Vapperhiir,

Please read this FAQ.

http://forum.giga-byte.co.uk/index.php/topic,2441.0.html

Have you sûre if a image bios (file downloaded for get a bios) is good (not corrupted)??
Try new download, by other computer.

http://www.gigabyte.com/MicroSite/121/flashbios_qflash.pdf
During the POST, press the <End> key to enter Q-Flash. Note: You can
access Q-Flash by either pressing the <End> key during the POST or pressing the <F8> key in
BIOS Setup.

Otherwise, Try install new downloaded bios by F6 with@Bios . Otherwise by F5.

I'm not sure that Your answer Gloup_Gloup is right for me or Us.

Would Your suggestion with Qflash and USB stick help me if PC won't even boot up the monitor screen, keyboard and mouse but all the fans and lights are on?

Hi Vapperhiir,

Sorry for my last answer, but I have a new idea:

Check if a batterie is ok. Because if is old, you have a problem for boot.

Check if your stick of ram is ok, take with just one stick or ram.
If necessary in the slot farthest from the processor.

Try with another stick RAM.  Not same Company or model.
