CPU upgrade in GA-MA785GM-US2H rev 1.0 fails POST
« on: July 03, 2011, 01:24:19 am »
Hello,

I decided to upgrade one of my machines form an Athlon X2 4000+ to a Athlon II X4 640.  My BIOS version is 12a, and according to the supported CPU list this should work.  As soon as I swap the CPU in however, I get continuous long beeps.  The manual indicates this is a graphics card problem.  I use the onboard graphics card, the system has 4GB in 2 DDR2 sticks.  I don't overclock, I don't remember what speed the memory is but it's not any kind of crazy fast stuff.

When I put the original X2 back in, it's fine.  Any suggestions as to how I can get this working?

Thanks!

Hi there,

could you just confirm your motherboard for us. Is it actually the GA-MA785GM-US2H?

Sorry, I missed the GM there, yes that is the board. And it's rev 1.0

Thought it probably was just wanted to confirm it.  :D (I've updated the title to show this)

As you say your choice of CPU should be supported and checking through the list from BIOS F7. Have you tried any of the other versions F7 - F11 to see if they make a difference?

If I were facing your problem I would flash the BIOS back to F7 using the QFlash Utility (do not use @BIOS) and see if the CPU works with that. When you flash the BIOS disable the "Keep DMI DATA" Option as this will eliminate any potential problems of your old set up being remembered and causing a possible issue. If the F7 BIOS doesn't help then try the F8 using the same procedure.

Nevermind, I figured it out.  Memory compatibility issue apparently.  My old CPU/memory were fine, but the new CPU wasn't having anything to do with that memory.
