GA-990FXA-UD5 no surround sound from onboard sound
« on: July 07, 2011, 04:20:55 am »
I have the logitech z906 5.1 surround sound speaker system but am only able to get stereo sound. the realtek HD audio manager shows that i have plugged speakers into the front, rear, and center/sub jacks, but I can only hear the test sound playing in the front speakers. I do not have a sound card other than the onboard audio module.

Hi

Often with these 7.1 audio systems the rear speakers need to be installed into the side speaker slots to get an output from them.

Or windows thinks that it only has 2 speakers instead of 7.1 (This is particularly true to Windows XP)
Nothing to see here, move along....

I do not have a 7.1 system, only a 5.1. I can try plugging the rear speakers into side, but that wouldn't explain the lack of center sound..? (and missing sub)

also, I forgot to mention that I have Windows 7 Professional 64 bit.

I am waiting for new graphics cards, as my old ones are DX10 (if that might make a difference? The Realtek manager detects my system as DX11 [probably because of Win7]. A pair in CrossfireX, Radeon HD 3850) My CPU is Phenom II x6 1090t @ 3.21 GHz. 16 GB corsair DDR 3 ram (not overclocked, so 1333?)

The fact that you have a 5.1 speaker system rather than a 7.1 setup is exactly why I said to plug the rear speakers into the ports for the side speakers.

And yes stick to 1333 Mhz for the memory.

I don t want to sound like a troll or something ,but you should go for a discrete sound card ,if you want to use the 5.1 system at it s full.
You will practically be able to upmix audio from 2 channels to 5.1/7.1 only on such cards as the realtek  lacks this feature.
On my X-Fi card the CMSS feature gets the job done very well ,opposed to the Xonar or the onboard Realtek.

Nevermind  the reply ,just checked that audio system and seen is a digital one ,so if you can t hear the center the issue must be with the Logitech system itself.

Well, I'm using the analog connectors that came with the system... I might try using a digital cable if I can't get this to work.

I'd also like to mention that I just upgraded my whole PC. The sound system is new, and the mobo is also new, however I tried out the speakers with the old system (Asus M2R32-MVP w/ onboard audio) and all 6 channels worked playing the test sound and some surround media content. it is possible but unlikely that something went wrong with the system during the upgrade. (I also just updated the sound drivers but no luck)

I tried plugging the rear speakers in the side port, but no change.

Switch the Rear inputs of the audio system with the Center/Sub ones after you re doing the audio test .If in the mobo output ,where the Rear or Front work ,the Center/Bass don t,then it s clear the issue is in audio path in the Center/Bass in the Logitech.
And digital would be recommended with the Realtek onboard as the DAC outputs in the Realtek are not to good..

well, I was able to borrow an optical cable and everything worked well. it's kind of annoying though that the analog out doesn't work.

I'm going to pony up the money for my own digital cable, but Realtek and gigabyte should keep working on this issue.

When I suggested using the side speaker configuration instaed of the rear I just meant in software not actually swapping the speaker cables.
