X58-UD7_I7-990X Overclocking

Guys,
I'm new to Gigabyte technology and have pieced together a box of bits listed below.
UD7 Board
I7-990x CPU
12 GB 2000Mhz Ram (3 x 4 GB kits)
2 X GTX580 SOC Graphics
SSD HD for OS
HAF X case.
My queery is,
My Ram shows as 1333Mhz.  Also The Shop that bought the ram for me assures me it runs triple rate but the website tells me this specific ram is Dual Data.  It's A-RAM brand 2000 Mhz (can't give further details right now, not near that particular PC).  Can anyone confirm that it can run at triple?
How then do I get the ram to run at it's reported speed of 2000 Mhz?
Also, generically, I'd like to ramp the whole PC up from stock speed of 3.46.  I'm not looking to run a small country, just a nice stable OC.  Can someone talk me through that process.  I'm a complete noob when it comes to OC and maths in general.

Hi and welcome to the Gigabyte Forum.

Firstly you need to do a lot of reading up on the various specs involved so that you understand them properly. Your memory is DDR which means Double Data Rate and is the third incarnation of it therefore DDR3. Your motherboard will accept RAM to run in Triple Channel mode which is what you have got. The speed is registered as 1333 MHz which is the top rate specified by JEDEC the governing body. To run at a faster speed than this it basically has to be overclocked and yours is rated to run at up to 2000MHz.

Double data rate just means that 2 transfers occur per clock cycle (the signal will look like a square wave oscillating between one and zero - transfers will be happening as the signal changes between each value). This is confusing as well because memory manufacturers always put the effective speed (1600MHz RAM actually only operates at 800MHz etc.)

All motherboards for X58 tend to default at 1333MHz, and you need to go into the BIOS to enable XMP or set the timings yourself with the correct voltage.

There are various guides around the web, EX58 has posted a good one. Good luck! You should be able to pass 4GHz no problem
