GA-Z68X-UD5-B3 setup with Raid 0 and OCZ Revo

GA-Z68X-UD5-B3 setup with Raid 0 and OCZ Revo
« on: July 21, 2011, 10:04:47 am »
I recently purchased the GA-Z68X-UD5-B3 and the following setup:
1x OCZ RevoDrive OCZSSDPX-1RVD0120 PCI-e SSD (OS Drive)
1x Crucial M4 CT064M4SSD2 2.5" 64GB SATA SSD (partitioned for virtual mem and caching)
4x 750 GB HDD's in Raid 0

I have been trying to configure this setup, but if I go into the bios and configure the motherboard to used RAID(XHD) then it will no longer recognize the Revo SSD and I can't boot anymore. Does anybody have a similar setup? Will this work at all?

The Revo itself is by default configured into its own Raid 0 of 2x60GB

The Revos are absolute system hogs effectively changing setting in Bios as if by Magic!

How I ended up getting it to play ball is give in to it ;)

If you load all your hardware into your box in one hit it won't play ball

One of the keys is load the OS on the revo under ACHI with nothing else attached

Once you have this done, patched and stable turn the bugger off and pull the power.

Attach your 4 drives to the ICH10R ports and boot to Bios

constantly check Sil (Revodrive) is the first boot device every time you go into BIOS for the next half hour! ;)

Stay away from XHD , drop to the next field, "ICH Sata controller mode"  and set to RAID(XHD) ....save and reboot!

Now you will have access to 'Ctrl+I in the boot phase to configure your raid (Rapid Raid)......save and reboot!

Now boot through to Windows and initialize your drives......start/right click computer/Manage/storage/disc management.....follow the prompts.

once the drives are active, reboot back to BIOS and set raid (ICH) back to ACHI...Chech sil is the first boot devise.....save and reboot!.........voilà !

If you need to get back in to Ctrl+I you will have to drop ACHI and go back to Raid and reboot...... I say this as my board with the revo attached drops the intel option during boot under ACHI

 Any problems........... post back

The problem that is happening is when I switch it from AHCI to RAID with at least one other hard drive plugged in. The Sil drive will no longer be on the list of bootable drives in the bios. However, if it is the only drive plugged in with RAID setup, then the drive will be recognized and bootable. Any ideas?

Mmmmmmmmmmmm!.....Read my first post again!.....Carefully!.........you don't need to go into the OS to configure the four drives to raid0, ... just BIOS

Just pretend the Revo is not there and configure the raid set..........Hell if you want you can even pull the Revo out of the slot and leave it in the bottom of the case.......It really doesn't matter.........when you connect it back up and set BIOS again, ... it'll be back, good as new with zero data lost.

I know this because Ive done this countless time when configuring my revo x2........and I had 9 drives to deal with.....4 in raid0, 2 in raid1 and the rest as multiple backup drives

You're right, I was confused about booting up into Windows while under raid. But what I really didn't realize is that Windows will still recognize the 4 hard drives as one drive even though we switch back to AHCI.

Thanks Aussie Allan! I feel like I owe you a beer
