GA-EX58-UD4P does not recoginze new hard drive?
« on: September 30, 2009, 01:47:34 am »
Hey everyone,

I'm having terrible problems with installing a new Hard drive that is 2TB. I have upgraded my bois to the most current version available. Updated my chip set and windows as well. The problem is, I cant see the drive at all. I have also tried different SATA cables and even tried ones that were working on one of my drives, just to make sure. And still nothing. The drive is not recognized by my bios at all. So, I can't format and I really cant do anything with it. I think it may be too big for xp64 even though i read somewhere that the max size on xp 64 is 2tb. I have researched this alot on the internet and found no real solution unless you have a nvidia chip set (which I do not have). I have even tried using the ubunto start up disc and to format with it's disc utility, but again since the bios does not see it even ubuntu is unable to see it. I tried messing around with my bios settings with very little luck. I know a bit about bios but not enough to feel comfortable in it.

Here's my spec's on my computer just for reference.
Windows XP 64 pro Service Pack 2
Motherboard - Gigabyte Ga-EX58-UD4P (rev.1003)(bois version 10, Northbridge Intel X58, Southbridge Intel ICH10R)

Video Card - EVGA 896-P3-1260-AR GeForce GTX 260 896MB 448-bit GDDR3 PCI Express 2.0 x16 HDCP Ready SLI Supported Video Card
Hard Drive - HITACHI Deskstar HD32000 IDK/7K 2TB 7200 RPM SATA 3.0Gb/s 3.5"
Hard Drive - Western Digital VelociRaptor WD3000HLFS 300GB 10000 RPM 16MB Cache SATA 3.0Gb/s
Power supply - COOLMAX CUQ-1200B 1200W ATX12V / EPS12V
Ram - mushkin 6GB (3 x 2GB) 240-Pin DDR3 SDRAM DDR3 1600 (PC3 12800)
Processor - Intel Core i7 920 Nehalem 2.66GHz 4 x 256KB L2 Cache 8MB L3 Cache LGA 1366 130W

The hitachi hard drive is giving me the most greif.

Hi

Is your bios F10D as listed to be the latest one at:
http://www.giga-byte.co.uk/Support/Motherboard/BIOS_Model.aspx?ProductID=2986 ?

Where is this 2TB HDD connected - to GSATA2 or SATA2 connectors?

Could you tell me where in Hitachi website I can find this HDD ? As I only found this 2TB family:
http://www.hitachigst.com/portal/site/en/products/ultrastar/A7K2000/
If you download datasheet which is located there and scroll down to the top of second page, then you will see list of models, compare it with markings on your HDD and tell me which on is yours)
ZX-S & C64 are still my favourites ;-)

Have you initialsed it in Windows?

1. Right-Hand click "My Computer"
2. Select "Manage"
3. Click on "Disk Management"
4. Scroll down the list of viewable disks, your 2TB HDD will probably be there with a black status bar, in which case right-hand click it and select "initialise"
5. Give the HDD your partition size of choice :)

You should now see your HDD!
