Yellow and green memory phase Leds

I recently bought and assembled a new pc, bought all new parts, Had a problem with my first motherboard and it had to be sent away to gigabyte for repair.

When it came back re-installed it and started it for the first time everything seemed fine, but as i hadn't connected the hard drive yet i didnt manage to do anything and thought i'll sort the OS later.

Came back a few hours later and went to turn the machine on again and this time it didnt start no fans, no noise, nothing exept for two LED's parallel to the memory the first of which is green then yellow didnt have this problem before so am quite puzzled on what to do?!

I really hope someone can help me

Hi and welcome to the Gigabyte Forum.

I notice that you are using a four module kit of memory which isn't really correct for this motherboard.

I expect your problem is down to the fact that you have filled four of your memory slots and are still trying to run the system on automatic settings. Try removing all of your modules apart from the one in the white slot nearest  the CPU and try rebooting. If that works then you will need to enter the BIOS and manually enter the settings for your memory which should be something like 9-9-9-24 and 1.5v.

  Harinder....there you go mate!.... extra information can make a huge difference to getting better detailed responses.

  DMs advise is rather valid this being a tri-channel board...... I have all my slots filled from the initial build so never came across your problem.

  After trying DMs suggestion and establishing the problem..... if this in fact the glitch..... grab your manual which will give you the correct order to populate the slots with 3 of your dimms.........if this also works you may have to try and get your hands on 2 more of the exact same mem modules.

Thanks for the response guys, I had a feeling that could be a problem as when i purchased this motherboard as part of a bundle for another computer it had all memory slots filled, i'll try removing 3 of the cards and give it a go and if not i guess im gonna have to buy 2 more.

One word of warning there before you go purchasing another couple of modules  for the board. When installing Dual or Triple Channel memory it can't be done "willy nilly" the sticks have to be matched. I don't just mean the same make and model, they have to be matched electrically. In other words they have an identical response to the frequencies etc. That is why you will find kits of matched memory for sale. You can usually get away with using two kits if you are using Dual Channel or three kits if you are using Triple Channel but make sure that the modules are marked so that you know which go together.

If you are still unsure please just post your questions.

Hi guys! just got back from holiday and thought i'd have another go at sorting my PC, and the same problem still occurs, i removed the memory leaving one in the white slot nearest the CPU and still the LED's next to the memory lit up. I also tried removing all the memory to see if the problem would go but even with all the slots empty the lights are still there. I have absolutly no clue on what to do!! please help!!!

 Don't know why this was not entered earlier.......I have the same board.......totally normal for all the memory leds to light up like a Xmas tree until the OS/Drive takes over towards the end of the boot......and if running at default timmings.......all will go out.........have you tried to install the OS yet?

Computer has never started up properly so i cant access the drive, theres no operating system on the drive. Only two of the lights are on, the green and yellow

  Just read the entire post again.......Do you know anyone that has a PSU meter......cause it looks like this would be the first thing I would be checking.

 Next would be a bad install of the CPU (bent pin nest)........and third .....you need to check things off one at a time unfortunatly

Hey Aussie, you probably think i have no clue what im doing... i re-read the entire post following both DM's and yours advice, followed the troubleshooting checklist in the back of the manual, which takes you step by step in finding the problem, and still nothing, even with nothing installed besides the cpu and the fan the lights are still on. I dont think it is the problem of bent pins because the computer has started once and hasnt after that, this motherboard was sent to gigabyte for repair because of bent pins and back then no lights were on with that problem.


I am completely lost, i dont know anyone with a PSU meter, are the available to buy?

Do you think i should just take it to a shop and let them have a go with trying to work out the problem?

  I suspect you know what your doing......thought that for a while........It's PSU or the board...........if your handy (DIY) and handy at finding things on the net........you could buy a 8-10 Pound Multimeter and check the rails yourself......here's a handy tutorial for DIY test.....

I would just like to back up Allan as far as what he said about the LEDs. If the motherboard and CPU are alright the LEDS will all light up at the start of POST and then once POST prgresses they should go out. This won't happen if there is no completing POST.

The bent pins in the CPU socket are quite a possibility even though you board has started once. There have been many boards that have run for ages only to start showing problems later down to bent pins.

The first thing would be to check the PSU. The easiest way is to swap it out for a decent one. Can you borrow one from somebody ?

I took the advice and luckly i had a spare PSU, replaced the current one with the spare and the same problem occured, if it is down to the voltages then it must be the motherboard which has the problem. I'll go out and pick up a multimeter and follow the tutorial which ALLEN provided so kindly,
