GA-Z68X-UD3R-B3 no power?
« on: September 02, 2011, 10:35:53 am »
Hey guys. I've just installed this board and it didn't fire up. Noticed no power LED - do these boards have them? I tried another PSU, but same result...no perceivable power to the board. So I figured it was a DOA board. With my 1366 socket Gigabyte mobo, when it's turned on, there will be a LED to indicate power. I have an older socket 775 ASUS mobo, which shows their logo lit up when power (main) is connected.

So I ordered another board - same - and placed it on its box before even installing into case, just to see if there's was power going in. I just connected the main from my spare PSU and again, I can see no indicated LED lighting up to show at least that it has power. I have also tried it with the cpu 6 pin connected. At this point with this test, I only have a CPU installed, but even without this, I should at least see a 'live' system?

I find it highly coincidental that 2 brand new boards have this problem. I have an OCZ 850 watt PSU in my case, which was working recently and lights up my ASUS mobo indicating to me that it is working. I have Antec KUHLER H2O 920 CPU Cooler, 16gbs of Corsair Vengence CMZ16GX3M4A1600C9B, and an Intel Core i7 2600K. This was going to be my new smaller system, but for the life of me, I've got nada. I've never come across this problem before and it seems weird that both mobo's share this issue.

Am I doing something incorrect? Should power LED's on this model be showing?

Any help greatly appreciated. I have contacted Gig. Tech support, but this might take some time and I'm hoping that this forum will be able to help more quickly.

Thanks

Hi and welcome.

You must have at least the CPU and one stick of memory to enable the board to POST. You must also have the 24 pin and the 8 pin power cables installed from the PSU.

Ideally you should install the buzzer and at least onto the F_PANEL connector to let you know what is happening. Normally there is a little "Power" switch on the top right of the board that will illuminate when you have power supplied properly.

Thanks for the reply. For the first mobo  installed in my case, I had these basic requirements, which should have posted but appeared dead with no power switch illumination. Pressing the power switch on my case did nothing.

It seems what you're saying in order to see the board power, I need the CPU, one stick of ram, 24 and 8 pin connections?

Exactly that! Anything less and it won't power up at all (well it would without the RAM but only until POST shut it down). So attach your power cables and buzzer along with the CPU/cooler/fan and single stick or RAM in the first slot near the outside of the motherboard DDR3_1.

Okay thanks. I don't have a buzzer. But even with the cpu, ram and 24/8 pins, there is no indicated power(illuminated led) on the board. Even if  you just plug in the 24 pin, and turn the power on, the power LED should light up. It does on other boards. Shouldn't this occur? If not, it can only mean mobo DOA or PSU DOA?

Is this correct?

As I said earlier the minimum requirement to see any power to the board is the 24 pin and the 8 pin power cables attached. Without them nothing happens.

If you have done that properly and still don't see any indication of power then I would check your PSU as maybe it is dead.

Okay, thanks. I've ordered a new PSU and will see if that's the problem.

Cheers

When you change your PSU never buy a cheap and nasty power supply they can go wrong and take out all you other expensive components at the same time. Not only that just because it is marked 600W often they are nowhere near that rating. Purchase a good make like Seasonic, CWT, Corsair, Thermaltake, Enermax, Gigabyte, Coolermaster, Antec, etc and try and get one with a single 12V rail if possible. I would advise you to get one of about 650W minimum or 850w if you use SLI or Crossfire GPUs etc..

Thanks for your PSU advice. I ordered a new one and tested one of my new boards...well no power light again. So after a new mobo and psu, I have discovered that this board - contrary to advice - does not light up when mains and cpu power is connected, unlike other boards. Okay so I again have a closer look at my case and noticed I put the power switch on my power led pin - insert embarrassed face. Computer booted with no problems except for some gigabyte software not working properly - like easy tune 6, which also won't uninstall so that I can try an updated version.

So now when I start my computer, the only thing that shows me it has power, is my    Antec KUHLER H2O 920 CPU Cooler sign - unimpressive cooler at that - 35.2 C on idle with fans just audible at 1500 RPM. The stock intel cooler for my i7 980X does a better job and it's quieter.

Just thought I'd update and clarify the power light...or lack there of.

Cheers

Thanks for the update and the info that in fact there is no power light. This is contrary to all of the boards I have seen, although I must admit to not having this particular board to look at, where the onboard power switch lights up on applying power to the board. Maybe the switch on your board is faulty? Machines always boot better from the proper pins not the LED ones!!! ;)

Yes I agree, that's why I didn't bother to check the correct pins and also why I ordered a new mobie...the same model, which also does not light up when connected to a mains.

I also have a GA-X58A-UD9 board, which lights up...and an ASUS board which again lights up...very perplexing.

Anyway, all good now and thanks for your assistance.

Cheers
