Fan control in GA-990XA-UD3

Hello,

Is there a way to change or limit CPU fan speed in GA-990XA-UD3 motherboard? I tried to do it, but it won't let me. Or maybe I just don't know how to do that?

I tried SpeedFan, but it won't working on my fans.

Hi there,

sadly fan control on any Gigabyte motherboard is very limited if you are using the fan headers for them and the best way to control fan speed is to use a dedicated fan controller and take the motherboard and BIOS out of the equation.

That said, have you tried controlling the fans using EasyTune6? Again, this is very limited and doesn't really give the user the kind of control one would wish for.

Oh, that's really sad. Why Gigabyte decided don't let users to control fans?
I bought new PC few days ago. Everything is working perfect, just one problem - CPU fan is very noisy then it reaches high rpm.  It's so noisy, that I even can't handle noise. So I want to limit it's rpm at some point. I will try EasyTune 6.

So, if ET6 will not work, then there will be only one solution - to buy new quiet fan?

As absic has already suggested you could fit a dedicated fan controller unit. Very inexpensive and gives you plenty of options.

Well, EasyTune6 really helped to adjust CPU fan speed and my noise problem is half way solved. Thanks.
Anyway, I don't really understand what that red line means in smart section. Can anyone explain more about those blue and yellow beads and what whey mean?

The Blue bead is the starting speed of the fan (minimum 10%) v temperature that you want it to sart at. (Minimum 10C)
The yellow bead sets the upper fan speed (100%) and the temperature that you want the full speed to be activated. This will go up to 100C but DO NOT set it at this as your Maximum CPU temp (if you are running a Phenom ii) is only 62C.

You might decide that you want full speed from the fan when you reach 55C so you need to drag the yellow bead so that the CPU Fan Speed is set to 100% and the CPU Temp is 55C. The red line indicates the way that the CPU fan's speed will increase as temperatures rise.

Are you using the standard AMD CPU Heatsink/Fan? If so, I would recommend an aftermarket one such as a Coolermaster TX3 or Arctic Cooling Freezer 7 Pro Rev2.

No, it's not a standard AMD cooler. The fan is some kind of Cooler Master. No idea how I got him. I won't ordered it when I bought the PC.

Well, ET6 helped to reduce noise a bit, temperatures are ok.

More than 7000 rpm when working at full power. Can you believe that?

Sorry for resurrecting but I have the same board and a Phenom X6 1055T 125W. I use a Noctua NH-C14 cooler, and I think it is good enough.

I read on AMD's forums that the maximum temperature of 62° refers to the dimensionless core-"tempereature", not the sensor somewhere on the CPU. When I run Prime95 the core tempereature can hit about 57° at most, while the reading used by Easytune6 is above 65°C at that point. Even in games, 65°C are exceeded, while the core-temp is at 46°, maximum. My problem is that Easytune6 seems to enable 100% speed at 66°C no matter what I set in fan control. Is there a workaround? Even if the slope says it should be lower at 66°C, it jumps to 100%  from 30% before for example.

I'd love to use an aftermarket fan controller, but if you know one witch automatically starts the fans at full speed and then reduces them to the specified low RPM, I'd like to know it too please. I haven't found one but my fans won't reliably start at low voltage, and the CPU fan header has this function too for example.

I never had much luck getting the stock AMD heatsink/fan to run at a reasonable speed with ET6 that did not sound like a jet takeoff. I just bought a better (and quieter) aftermarket model and was much happier.

I actually use the Noctua NH-D14 which has two 140mm fans. I run these at full power, directly from a connector on the PSU all of the time, as they are so quiet.

My solution was actually simple: I'm using a low noise adapter to limit the maximum speed of the fan. Of course this requires a large heatsink, since 100% means 950RPM now.

Don't want to capture this thread but I got a similar but bit more complexe problem. Since my CPU (FX-6100) is watercooled (passively), I just want to use fans for cooling my hdd (means 8 hdds with 3 120mm fans) if they reach a specified temp. So what I need is a tool that allows me to control the fan speed because of the hdd temps - and afaik, no dedi fan-controller is able to as it would mean to read out SMART values of the hdds (at least I think so). So is there any solution for this besides using a fan-controller together with 8 temp sensors?
