Question about GA-MA790X-UD4P and Power Supply
«

Hello,
I am new to the forum, and to Gigabyte in general.
I am about to buy the above mobo for a new PC and my question is - what are the "implications", if any, if I use a PSU with P4 CPU connector instead of one with 8 pin?
Thanks!

Hi
one of these,
http://www.xpcgear.com/p412volt.html
or one of these,
http://www.xpcgear.com/20to24pinatx.html
will convert your power supply requirements,
really would consider a new psu as they don't last forever and when they go POP, your new mobo may too,
Google for PSU calculator, this will give you a rough idea on how big a psu you need,
regards

Am guessing you mean its got the 20 pin and not the 24pin connector? If its an old PSU (which it probably would be) may be worth spending some decent money on a new one. PSU is often overlooked

No, I meant the 8 pin CPU connector as oppose to the 4 pin.

Right, I see, as far as i'm aware it should work...but may possibly limit your overclock if you plan to overclock.

So if I am not O.C. the P4 should work just fine?
Thanks!

Hi Sibi
You really need to find out the PSU output
Here is one,
http://web.aanet.com.au/SnooP/psucalc.php
,. or this one
http://www.antec.outervision.com/
Insert your intended system and it will tell you your requirments

Thanks Pottypete,
The output is not the issue. According to all these sites I need less than 300W but I am looking at a 500W.
The issue is whether this mobo, that has an 8 pin CPU 12V adapter can work with only 4 pin 12V as in the majority of the PSUs in the market.

Yeah it will be fine. If the worst comes to the worst you can just buy a 2x molex - 8 pin mobo adaptor
