problems with presentation of boot messages on new monitor
« on: October 08, 2011, 09:31:28 am »
I have a 81PE1000G and have recently switched from an ordinary CRT monitor to an HPL1950 LCD monitor. Now, the boot messages are appearing skewed off to the left side of the monitor so that I can't read the first words of the messages. I upgraded the BIOS to F6 but the symptoms are the same.
How do I fix this please? TIA ... Greg

Hi and welcome to the Gigabyte Forum Greg.

It sounds to me like it is a simple case of the resolution being the wrong size. LCD monitors have a "natural size" at which they work best. It is quite possible that yours is set to some other size and is not displaying all of the desktop. You will need to change your monitor settings by right clicking on the desktop. If you require any more help just shout.

Also it might need some tweaking in monitor options, not just adjusting screen resolution. Those buttons on monitors aren't there for no reason. :D

Quite correct Grozdan but I suspect that if it is overscanning to the point where the OP can't even see half the dialogue box it is probably more than just a monitor tweak. But it is possible of course.

Thanks very much for the quick replies. I'm surprised a Windows setting (change screen resolution from windows desktop) changes the appearance of messages at boot time. I'll experiment with it though, cheers ... Greg

Sorry I did miss the fact that it was at boot time. It is probably more likely a monitor screen control that needs tweaking then. Some have a setting for just moving the dialogue box itself. On others you have to move the whole screen to centralise and make it fit.

Thanks Dark Mantis. I thought to check the settings of th emonitor itself by using the monitor's own menu and was surprised to read that the screen resolution was changed to 800x600 as a result of changing the resoution in Windows. However, the change has not altered the presentation of the boot messages. Strange. Any ideas? TIA ... Greg

Try looking on the monitor's menu and see if there is anywhere there that refers to  a dialogue box or "On Screeen Display" if there is that is what you need to move via the buttons on the monitor itself.

Ok, will do but won't this change the location of the normal Windows desktop too?

No it will just move the position of the box that shows the on screen menu of your monitor. You can always reset the monitor to the factory default settings anyway at any time.

I see the monitor specifies 75hz if correct standard settings is 60hz & may need resetting.
Have you checked for latest Graphic Drivers. The spec seems to be 1280x1024 &
HP provide drivers. Have you installed new drivers for Monitor.

What OS ? if using Win 7 with LCD has nasty habbit of setting to widescreen settings & can
even lock up screen if using DVI-D. One workaround for this is to  set from personalise
& select  windows classic this gives you more monitor settings once done & saved you
can choose any themes. Are you using old D-Sub connector as is easier to set up Monitor
to start with.
As I use both Widescreen & 19"x19" the latter caused problems. Are you using suitable
Graphics card. I have upgraded to full HD DVI-D.

Thanks again for your answers.

I moved the OSD to the right but it hasn't altered the location of the startup messages.

I'm using Win 7 although the previous OS Win XP had the same symptoms. The problem was introduced when I swapped an old fashion CRT for the current LCD. The display adapter is an ATI Radeon 9600 and I am driving the monitor through a VGA cable. Will a DVI cable fix it?

The default settings of the monitor is 60Hz 1024 x 768 and after Windows loads "H=67.5 kHz  V= 75 Hz" shows at the bottom of the monitor menu.

I wil check for new drivers for the monitor but any new driver will be a windows driver won't it? Will it affect how the monitor behaves during startup?
cheers
Greg

I certainly would try a new cable. Is the one you are using at present supplied with the new monitor ? Try a different one anyway. Nothing lost and easy trial.

You have a good point about initial boot Greg but that can be altered in bios. Looking at your setup
as DM suggests change lead. You should have DVI-D or HDMI connectors. Think the Monitor
spec was DVI-D so you will get much better quality screen & probably HD with correct lead.
Monitors are often supplied with old D-Sub connectors.

I installed Win 7 on old 19" LCD Monitor with D-Sub connector. When I changed to 19" HD Monitor
& DVI-D lead, after boot couldn't get to any settings. Connected to widescreen & then was able to set
up Monitor. Playing about with Monitors discovered the Win Classic trick but you have to follow through
as though setting XP to get to Monitor settings as Win 7 is widescreen oriented. Am using 5770 HD
ATI Graphics. Will add another post though can't remember original poster.
Quote:
There have been several instances where users of ATI graphic cards have had problems with finding a 1" black border around the image when connecting via an HDMI lead.

Forum Member CoolDude64 has provided the following set-up procedure to help any facing this problem.

1. Click START - ALL PROGRAMS- CATALYST CONTROL CENTER - CCC ADVANCED- GRAPHICS MENU- DESKTOP & DISPLAYS- Click on your monitor avatar- right click PROPERTIES- Ensure Enable GPU Scaling box is ticked- SCALING OPTIONS menu tab- move slider to 0 overscanand and the screen image will increase in size to 100% as you move the slider.

or

2. Right click on a free space on the desktop and click SCREEN RESOLUTION. Click ADVANCED. Click on CATALYST CONTROL CENTER tab.Click on the button to open C C C. Follow the route as in 1 above from GRAPHICS menu.

The history is ATI assumes that if you connect an HDMI cable then you are going to connect it to a TV. Most tv's are configured with overscan so ATI defaults to shrinking the image by 15% when using a HDMI cable to ensure the entire desktop will be visible. Consequently, connecting it to a pc monitor using a HDMI cable will only show 85% of the desktop.
The solution has to ways of achieving 100% desktop view.

Thanks to CoolDude64 for supplying this answer, it's much appreciated.

Regards tinker.
