Can't update BIOS on X58AUD3R Rev 2

Can't update BIOS on X58AUD3R Rev 2
« on: October 13, 2011, 07:30:22 am »
This is strange. I've tried updating the BIOS numerous different ways and tried numerous different BIOS files. I'm not a newb at this.

So my Mobo is the Gigabyte X58AUD3R Rev 2.0. Currently I'm running BIOS version FC. I've tried to update to FF, FG and even FH. I've tried doing so both using the @BIOS utility AND booting from a USB flash drive and using the command line utility provided with the BIOSs. Each time it just says I have a bad BIOS file. Here is what @BIOS gives me:

The command line utility just says it's a bad BIOS.

And yes I've tried downloading the BIOS from several different servers.

System specs are:
Main System: i7 970 OCed to 4.2 | Noctua D14 | Gigabyte UD3R | 12GB G.Skill | Intel 80GB SSD | 2x2TB WD Green in RAID 1 | Gigabyte 5970 | LG Blu-Ray DVD combo | Corsair 800D | Corsair 850HX PSU | Dell 3007 WFP 30" LCD | Samsung T240HD

Welcome and thanks for making my job easy with full, well presented information

I think your trying to load the wrong file.....

In the image shown ..... I think it's the very lowest file in the list....not the one highlighted , but the one ..."X58AUD3R.FG1...(FG1 File - 2,048 KB)

 2) if you can possibly help it....don't use @Bios ......QFlash or other is much safer

 3) put the target file and the target file only onto a formatted (fat 16 or 32 not NTFS) memory stick ..... "after unpacking" and try,try again .....sometimes large memory sticks can give issues as well......1 to 2 GB capacity thumb drives are best overall for flashing

OOPS! ..... actually I think it's the one above the highlighted file ....sorry.....been a while and something I do on autopilot now!

Hi there,

actually the BIOS file is the bottom one in the list. The highlited line is the 7Zip file.

The FLASHSPI.EXE is another method for flashing the BIOS through DOS.

Thanks for the reply.

Ok I've done some more research and the issue is that my old BIOS is 1mb and the newer ones are 2mb. I believe they all went to 2mb when they implemented 3TB drive support because they needed to add some UEFI code in order to support the larger drives. Anyway I SHOULD be able to update to this larger BIOS but it seems only with @BIOS or the FlashSPI executable that came with the BIOS image. You can see here for another thread on this:

http://forums.tweaktown.com/gigabyte/28441-gigabyte-latest-beta-bios-445.html

The issue I'm having is that I AM using the latest version of @BIOS and I have also tried the FlashSPI file that came with the BIOS on a bootable USB stick. Both complain that the BIOS file is not correct. :(

Yes I know the last file is the BIOS image, the highlighted file there was NOT what I selected. I should have made the screenshot less confusing sorry.

As the BIOS file sizes are different you do need to use either the @BIOS software or the FLASHSPI method to update the BIOS.

Are you using the latest version of @BIOS?
Have you tried updating the BIOS from the server rather than from the downloaded file?

Good advice....if you have to use @Bios.....the latest version is critical to use for all Gigabyte Bios updates from about Jan 2011....also make sure you tick "Clear DMI Data " when Flashing to a later version ;)

SUCCESS!!

Okay the issue WAS that I was not running the latest version of @BIOS. HOWEVER it WAS the latest version as officially listed on their site. EVEN the auto update said it was the latest version. HOWEVER the link HERE

http://ca.gigabyte.com/products/product-page.aspx?pid=3449&dl=1#bios

Saying

"Please use the latest @BIOS or FLASHSPI.EXE to reflash BIOS"

Where @BIOS points to the following file:

http://download.gigabyte.asia/FileList/Utility/motherboard_utility_gbttools_gbt_atbios.exe

seems to link to a different version!? Anyway this version DID the trick! Thanks all!

Left hand ,right hand again.......Absic, you might want to point runn3R to this glitch on the web-site to save further, future confusion?
