No Beeps, no post, no display GA-990FXA-UD3 MOBO
« on: October 22, 2011, 01:48:23 pm »
This is my 1st system build;
GA-990FXA-UD3 MOBO
AMD FX-8150 CPU
Corsair Hydro H60 Liquid Cooling
MSI Radeon 6870 Hawk Video card
Antec P183 case
Seasonic X-850 watt modular PSO
G.Skill Ripjaws DDR3 1866Mhz, 16Gb

My 1st & thereafter attempts to get a 1st time post have been fruitless. No Beeps, no posts, no display,,, Natta!

What I've done to diagnose problem;
1. Checked that I had all required power plugged into the right places(to the very best of my knowledge anyway). Unplugged & re plugged in each. No Beeps, no posts, no display,,, Natta!
2. Pulled all memory, repower up. No Beeps, no posts, no display,,, Natta!
3. Put 1 8GB memory stick back in. No Beeps, no posts, no display,,, Natta!
4. Powered off unplugged PSU & cleared CMOS. Powered back up. No Beeps, no posts, no display,,, Natta!
5. Powered back off/unplugged PSU, removed CMOS battery, let sit for 2 minutes, put battery back in, powered back up. No Beeps, no posts, no display,,, Natta!
8. Case fans, PWM fans & video card fans are up & spinning just fine. Front USB ports are working with a cheap set of speaker. So I can hear any beeps ... if they ever occur. There is a power light on 1 of the speakers so I know they are getting power from the USB 2.0 ports.

This leads me to believe that the Mobo is bad or the CPU is bad, but being a 1st time builder maybe I haven't done enough checking. Could anyone help me out here with any more suggestion, anything else I could check. I'm pulling my hair out, what's left of it that is. LOL!!

Thanks in advance!!

Hi there,

I know how frustrating this kind of thing can be, especially as it's your first build!

To hear the POST Beeps you need to attach a small speaker/buzzer to the motherboard header.

You might want to look through this thread: http://forum.giga-byte.co.uk/index.php/topic,5704.msg45814.html#msg45814 where I go through putting a new system together as it may give you some ideas of things to try.

Are you sure that you have plugged in the 12v EATX connection near the CPU as well as the 24 pin connector on the motherboard ?

As absic said make sure that you have a buzzer connected to the F_PANEL connector on the motherboard. By the way the Buzzers (piezo electric devices) are polarity conciuos so they must be attached the right way round to work properly.

Hi,

Most chassis have a speaker/buzzer as part of the package, I would be surprised if yours hasn't.

The graphic below shows the various connectors but no speaker/buzzer

http://www.overclockersclub.com/reviews/antec_p183/images/33.htm

If this is the case then this might be an option:

I have my front panel audio connected and a small speaker attached to the port their. That should work, shouldn't it? Besides, speaker or no speaker I'm not even getting a post screen to display.

Thanks for everyones help,
Jim

I would argue that point with you nowadays. To be fair at one time you were totally correct and all cases came with a speaker attached but in these last few years that seems to be less and less the case. Sometimes a buzzer will be included or with the motherboard kit.

No I am afraid it wouldn't work with your speaker as you imagine but as you say unless you pass or fail POST there is not any sound anyway.

Try putting the basic PC components together on a cardboard box to make sure you haven't got a short being caused by the PC case.

Well, may I've been fortunate DM. I had a Coolermaster Sileo 500 that had a speaker/buzzer and my NZXT Phantom came with one also, looks like I was lucky then.

I knew taking everything back out of the case was another avenue to try, I was just avoiding it as a last resort. Ha! I have another person over on overclocker telling me that I have to apply a BIOS update in order for my mobo to work with new bulldozer CPU. I bought my mobo(see previous) because I thought it was supposed to work with the new bulldozer chips out of the box. Things are getting clear as mud as I move along here. Anyone know anything about this?

PS: Yes I have pluged the atx cpu power in.

Yes there are exception obviously and the cases you picked are good quality and probably more generous with the accessories than most makes.

What BIOS version are you running at the moment ? also what revision is your board ? ( Sorry absic we must have posted at the same time!)

Hi again,

you need to be running BIOS F3 for the Rev 1.0 and Rev 1.1 versions of this board and BIOS version FB for the Rev 1.2 version.

If you are running an earlier version then you will need a supported CPU to update the BIOS first. Sorry, but I had assumed that this board would take the Bulldozer CPU's out-of-the-box so I hadn't considered this as a possibility

The bord is Rev 1, but since I can't even get to a bios post I have no idea what the version number is in the BIOS. I used my curren't system to download the BIOS updates & apply them once I had the new machine at least up to a BIOS screen, but that isn't happening now so I am stuck with buying a cheap am3 socket cpu just to be able to update the bios on the new mobo inorder to use my new bulldozer chip. Do I have this right?

Darn thing is I'll never use the temp cpu again after that.

Yes, I'm afraid that's about the size of it. Unless you know someone who is running  an AMD system that will let you borrow their CPU to run the BIOS update.

Another option is to see if a local PC store can help you out. They may make a small charge for doing this but it is worth a try.

Well sounds like it's pretty well confirmed since you & the person over on Overclockers are telling me the same thing. Didn't think this BIOS thing would stop it dead in it's tracks. Figured the CPU would still work, but maybe just not have quite all the features available. Seems misleading by Gigabyte to advertise this board as AM3+ ready when it really isn't without the BIOS update. Something just doesn't seem right here. What's your feelings?  Thanks for the idea of checking out a local PC store though. I will give that a try 1st thing Monday morning.

I really appreciate everyones input on this issue

The PC store is a good idea of absic's but it would still be better if you could just borrow an older chip off a friend to run the update.
