ssd update on ga890udh3

Hello, I just updated from a sata 2 to a sata3(corsair gt) boot drive. I cloned the old drive with acronis, no problems., but the new drive only (ha only) runs @ apprx. 300 mb/s. The old setup had 4 samsung f4 drives in raid 0 on ports 0-3 and the boot drive on port 6 gsata. So I moved the new drive to port 4 for sata3 but I believe it is being controlled by the raid controller. Ahci is on and ok but if I switch to sata for ports 0-3 I lose my raid drive. Is there any way to keep both (sata3 and raid) and achieve true sata3 out of the ssd?

Hi there,

Welcome to the world of SSD's and RAID on the AMD platform.

You are quite right in your assumption that, when using AMD RAID, a single drive works in AHCI Mode but it is controlled by the RAID Controller and, if you want to keep the RAID Array, then there is nothing that you can do to really improve things that much.

It is, however, worth checking that you are running the latest AMD RAID Drivers (11.9) which you can download from here: http://support.amd.com/us/gpudownload/windows/Pages/raid_windows.aspx

Another thing to do is temporarily remove the RAID Array and test your SSD in AHCI mode to see what speeds you are getting. This will indicate if the RAID controller is having as big an impact as you think it is. Also test the system with the SSD attached to one of the GSATA2 ports in AHCI Mode as you may find this is actually quicker.

Hello Absic, I figured it would be you to reply to this issue after the post was unanswered for a couple of days. Thanks again for your knowledge and clearness.

Yeah, This does kinda suck.I never realized it would be one or the other(raid or sata3).well it's not quite one or the other.Old sata2 ssd on gsata w/raid=200mb/s.New sata3 on raid controller=320mb/s. Sata3 w/no raid=435 mb/s(and way faster boot times)..On gsata I get 120 mb/s,

And yes the drivers are all up to date. I guess I'll settle for 320 mb/s and keep my raid array. After all I get 530-550 mb/s out of it and I run all my games from there. Seems a waste of a good boot drive, but 320 mb/s is still better than what I was getting from the sata2 ssd.

Does Intel have this issue also?

Thanks again    :-\

Hi stewmann,

Well, you are getting similar figures from your SSD that I am getting from my ADATA 511 SSD drives. Which make of SSD are you using?

To be honest I'm not sure if the Intel platform has similar issues but somehow, I don't think so as I am talking to ADATA and have been for over a month, about the read/write speeds I have been getting on my own system.
