GA 990FXA-UD3 PSU?

Hi, can anyone shed some light please?
I just bought some components to upgrade my system,
GA 990FXA-UD3 motherboard
AMD Phenom II X6 1100T 3.3GHz Black Edition
16g ram

I installed everything, but can't get any power to the mb. No beeps, no fans coming on, no leds, nothing.
I have a  OCZ 500W StealthXStream 2 ATX PSU, which is quite new, and working fine.
The manual for the motherboard says that PSU should be 500w or larger.
Any ideas? Is this motherboard faulty? Is the PSU not powerful enough to get even the fans turning?

Hi,

What I suggest you do is this, go and have a break and make yourself a  cup of coffee or tea. The reason I say this is because you are probably at your wits end and just can't fathom out what is wrong.......we've all been there.

Next have a careful read of this post written by absic http://forum.giga-byte.co.uk/index.php/topic,5704.0.html

Pay close attention to the part where he has assembled just the basic components out of the case or chassis, you can see that the MB is on a cardboard box as the system is built out of the case. So just read and digest this information to begin with so that you understand, you have probably built systems before but if you have or haven't it's going to be beneficial.

Just make an observation before you do anything else

Hi teknology9, thanks for the reply, and all the info. I bought a new PSU, 700w, and it works fine. Yes, I was at wits end, and had tried everything, incluging building out the case, anyway that problem is solved. Now to configure my new system as it is not booting, but that is another problem!

Also, refer to your MB manual and is everything seated correctly, safety first check before switching on the power

Have you tested your memory with Memtest here:  http://www.memtest.org/

If you have any known good compatible parts try them also.

Which BIOS do you have at present? And which revision do you have.....rev 1.0?

Hi, I flashed the bios to F5 (I have rev 1.0) but it made no difference. I have everything seated correctly, I have read the manual, and I have disconnected all other hardrives, just the boot drive & graphics card on at the mo. I tried removing the ram (I can't do a ramtest as I can't boot to get online to try!). I have checked the link you pasted, thanks,
It starts to boot windows, as the little coloured windows start there is a very quick BSOD flash, and then it resets itself!
I am going to recheck everything, and get back to you. It seems like hardrive or faulty boot sector, I have no DVD drive (due to there being no IDE), so cant boot off disk. Weird though because I can boot from my older motherboard + parts!

Hi,

Ok, Memtest can be downloaded onto a pendrive and the testing can be carried out from there.

EDIT Please ensure 1 RAM module is in slot 1 beforehand otherwise it wont boot!!!

http://www.memtest.org/ if then scroll down until you see:  Auto Installer for USB Key and download it onto a pendrive, you can then test each module.

Pendrive size: 2Gb......smaller seems to work better.

This can be done by plugging the pendrive into the USB headers at the rear of your MB, power on and and press F12 and select your pendrive from what is displayed on the screen.

So with 1 module in slot 1 and allow for 10 passes/ cycles, this may take a while but you will soon find out if your problem is memory related, do this for each module.

Also which make  and type of RAM are you using?

As always....safety first take your time and power on when your sure everything is connected correctly

Teknology9, thanks again for all your help.
I will try that tonight when I get home. I spoke to an IT guy at work (I am a graphic designer btw, not an IT guru, but I have been building my own PCs for at least the last 12yrs, so have some experience). Anyway, he told me that Win7 will need to be re-installed, as it will be configured for my old system, so probably best to start from scratch. I really wanted to avoid doing that, but it is always a good way of cleaning out the garbage!

I am using Corsair Vengeance DDR3 1600MHz 4GB
PS, I will also try and boot from a USB stick, thanks for those links, you've been a fantastic help.

Your IT guy was quite correct you always need to reinstall Windows every time you upgrade any major items. As you say it gets rid of the accumulated crap anyway and makes everything run faster.

I went through some similar problems and absic the forum Moderator helped me out so I'm passing on that knowledge to you.

I didn't know how long you have been building systems that's why I highlighted the safety aspect.

NB

Install all the relevant drivers onto a pendrive first, then say install the chipset first...reboot and then the next one....reboot... and so on.

teknology9, absolutely agree with the safety aspects, so thanks for highlighting that, you can never be too careful. I have only been building systems for myself & kids, so I still regard myself as a novice, so it is very helpful to be able to get info from experienced people such as yourselves.

The Sandisk is a decent make as well, I have several of them myself. It is worth trying to get a hold of a small drive too under 2GB if possible as a failsafe.
