Ga-z68ap-d3 USB problem

Hi , I am newbie to this forum , and have a problem with getting my new build system to "see" my WD Passport USB Drive. Just keep getting "Usb Device not recognised and it shows in Device Manager as  Unknown Device. Have tried all usb2 and usb3 ports all give the same result.

My Mobo is at the latest Bios level (F6) and I am running windows 7 64bit SP1.

The crazy thing is that on my older system , also a Gigabyte Mobo with Windows 7 64bit the drive works just fine !  I am guessing that I might be missing some BIOS setting , but having looked for days now , I am hoping for some help.

Try on BIOS disable USB3 parameters.

Is the problem that the motherboard isn't seeing the drive on bootup or is it not finding it during a Windows session as well ?

Both - at boot it is not recognised, and when inserted into usb port after windows boot I get a usb device not recognised , pop up and Device manager show it under Universal Serial BUs Controllers as an Unknown Device.

I have tried Disable USB3 as suggerted in previous post , but results are the same .......

Thanks for the reply and the info on USB ports , which I have read. Disable USB3 did   not help with the problem.

So I got out my trusty multimeter. Voila! Problem solved! Neither of the two computers on which I was testing this drive were putting out enough voltage to the USB cable.

I don't find that surprising Gloup_Gloup as there have been quite  a few occurances of this and sometimes it has been helped by changing the cable and sometimes not. What you say would make sense.

Thanks Gloup-Gloup. Having trouble getting to your link, but in the meantime have ordered USB "Y" splitter to use 2 x USB ports to power the drive. Only cost a couple of quid!  I am not techie enough to use multi-meter at the moment

It's worth a try Allanm but of course a Y splitter will only increase the current capacity not the voltage as it will just supply two lots of the same volts. As you said though for a couple of quid it's worth trying anyway.

Gents , Thanks for your support on this. I have now come to the conclusion that my USB drive is broken ! I rebuilt my old system today and when I tried my USB drive on this sysem it also failed.  To confirm this is the case my friend who is visiting at the weekend is bring his drive ( Same type and model as mine) to put on to my system..

I wouldn't be surprised at that actually Allan as when they first came on the market we had quite a few failures on the forum here and nearly all were down to failing drives. Please do let us know the outcome though.

Just completed my testing with a friends WD usb drive and it is working OK on my system. So problem is with my drive (or so I thought!). Decided to test the drive further by removing it from the casing , removing the small circuit board that connects to a standard SATA and power connection on the drive ( WD Scorpio Blue) and installed it in my system. And guess what it works!! I can only conclude that the fault is in the USB circuit board , but on the up side I have an additional 250GB drive in my system.

If not the circuit board we had quite a few where the cable end (plug) wasn't going deep enough to make a connection. Might be worth checking.
