GA EX58-DS4 rev 1.0 6GB installed 4GB usable ?
« on: December 12, 2011, 07:58:42 pm »
Hello everyone,

I have GA-EX58-DS4 motherboard with BIOS F11 and I was running with RAM Kingston 3x1GB 1066Mhz CL7 1.5V. Now I bought Corsair 3x2GB 1600Mhz CL9 1.65V and BIOS recognizes only 4GB of RAM. Windows 7 (x64) sees that 6GB are installed but says that only 4GB are usable. Plus CPU-Z is saying that I have 6GB but the RAM runs on Dual Channel mode.

I have noticed that in BIOS under the RAM Channels options, channel B doesn´t register any RAM module what is very weird. When I put the Kingston back, it was all runing just fine and all channels were registering the RAM modules. Then I added the Corsair to the Kingston and I had 9GB of RAM and all channels were fine. But then again when I tried to run the system with Corsair, only 4GB were usable.

By the way I tried to boot the system with one Corsair module at the time and each one was ok. So there is no problem with Corsair modules as well as the channels on the motherboard.

I also checked the Boot Advanced options to uncheck the maximum memory option and it didn´t help.

I hope I didn´t confuse anyone, if so I apologise.

Do you know what can I do to fix it ? I am grateful for any suggestion.  :)

Hi dawkosvk,

Maybe when you change a kit of RAM (by exemple Kingston kit for Corsair kit)

I suggest this instructions:

Before you remove a kit of RAM , AND After you place a NEW kit of RAM...

Hi
...

Try clearing the CMOS before installing the GPU. follow these instructions exactly.

Remove the power cable from the mains supply and then press the power switch on the case for a few seconds just to drain any residual energy in the PSU capacitors.

Once done remove the motherboard battery for at least one hour before replacing it.

Next plug back into the mains supply and boot.

You will now need to enter the BIOS by pressing DEL and load Optimised BIOS Defaults.

Make any other changes to the BIOS settings to suit your self like disabling the floppy drive, disabling the full screen logo and making the HDD the primary boot device and then press F10 to save and exit.

Come again here with comments ....

Hi and welcome.

I would advise doing what Gloup_Gloup suggested first and see if that helps. If not then I think it would be worth checking for bent pins on the CPU socket also.

Take all the usual anti-static precautions.

Very carefully remove the heatsink and fan. Probably a slight twisting motion is best to release the two as the thermal paste can act like a glue.

Once off remove the CPU taking extreme care both physically and electrically(static) and place somewhere safe.

Make sure that the lighting is very good and even.

Now scrutinise the socket for any pins that are out of alignment, even slightly.
Please take a couple of macro (close up) photos of the socket and post them on here for us to check.

Also look at the bottom of the CPU at the lands (little copper circles) and make sure that there is a mark in each somewhere near the centre.
If there are any missing marks or any of the pins are obviously bent then that is your problem. Take a couple of good photos of the rear of the CPU also.

Before refitting the CPU clean off all residue of the old thermal paste and the same on the heatsink and then apply a small amount (about the size of a grain of rice) to the centre of the CPU once it is inserted in the socket.

Thx for the answers  :)

Unfortunately the first suggestion didn´t work for me and for the second one = I ran out of a thermal compound so I have to wait till it comes.

No worries, just post back with the photos (try not to use flash if you can help it. Good alround light is better if possible.) when you are ready and we'll take it from there.  ;)

Hello again,

So I looked under the CPU and corrected one pin which was leaning a little bit. Also I corrected some pins on motherboard and tried to get rid of as many dust as possible. Finally everything works, BIOS and WIN see 6GB available.
