My PC just shut down randomly - HELP?
« on: December 24, 2011, 05:27:04 pm »
I haven't changed anything on my PC, inside or out for over a week (probably more but just saying), and it's just randomly turned off, no warning, and then it rebooted, said start windows normally.. now it's fine, 2 minutes later.. shuts down again, this time it won't turn back on...

So I unplug the power cable and leave it for 5mins, now i'm on again and its working fine, my cpu temp is 27 degrees right now, and gpu is 28, no disk errors, no power cuts, nothing changed on pc or inside case..

What could it be?

As a guess, as there is nothing much else to go on, it would sound like a power fault.

Hi MiiCK,  ;)

Just the last few days,
I had a problem restarting a repetition.
As if the system did not accept the correct settings in BIOS and reboot several times to put the bios by default.
Everything went well, however before.
24 of 24 for several days the computer was open.

I opened the side panel.
And I saw that I had a lot of dust and cat hair on the fan and heatsink on the CPU.
Of course also a bit on other parts.
I cleaned it all with my vacuum cleaner.
I restart and presto magic all went well.
No more unpleasant reboot.

I must say that I have two cats.

Does your new situation is related to the topic you've done.  ???

Hi MiiCK,

If you are going to clean inside your PC use canned air and preferably clean it in another room so the dust doesn't go back into the system again if it cleaned the same room ( aint that right absic?!!! :))

I don't how many fans you have on your system but as you know ventilation is important....as is the thermal compound on your CPU...perhaps that could be checked.

Also as DM has stated it might be worth getting your PSU checked and if you have a known good PSU use that one instead.

But first and foremost take care where electricity is concerned......safety first.

Hope this helps.......and I won't mention anymore Queen or Freddy Mercury songs!!!! :D

Hi teknology9 and all friends,

I completely forgot to say that indeed I had used a duster.
As said Teknology a''canned air.''
To finish the job and clean the place very close.
Use a vacuum cleaner is a bit big, but be careful anyway.
Otherwise use only the duster.

I've cleaned my whole my PC, dust free!

Still can't find out the error, checked everywhere and everything - I think it's a dodgy connection from my plug socket to PSU, will post back if anything else occurs.

I never got round to editing my RAM settings gloup, so can't be that either!

Thanks guys.

Hi MiiCK,  ;)

Other posibility:

A pin on socket is folded.
Check if your socket is ok.

If your are not sure, take a picture and send to free web-sites and post here a link.
Make attention when you take a picture.

Avoid shaking hands. Place your forearms on the edge of the tower.
Hold your breath and take a close up picture of socket (and maybe CPU).

I assume you have put a nut of thermal paste between cpu and HeatSinkFan...

Like I say, I haven't took off my CPU fan or anything, it's been made since day #1, so yeah the thermal paste will be fine - pea size thermal dab, and the pins can't be bent as I haven't gone anywhere near pins...

Think it may have been a random thing that can't be explained!

Happy Christmas.

Actually just because you haven't removed your CPU doesn't necessarilly mean that the pins are fine. Occasionally they have been known to burn or bend due to heat especially if the contact wasn't perfect in the first place. Probably doesn't affect you but worth bearing in mind anyway.

By the way a pea size of TIM is too much by far. Too much paste is as bad as too little.

No more issues so far!

Wiggled cables, ran every possible thing on PC at once, with no overheating or shutdowns, maybe just some updates or something weird  ???

I too have been experiencing the exact same thing. At least it appears to be the same.

After a few months of stability with absolutely no issues from this motherboard (Z68-UD7), it has now decided that stability is something it would rather not continue. Starting a few days ago, it would reboot out of the blue. This happened 3 times. One while surfing the net, one while playing Skyrim, and the last one while sitting idle. The first 2 times it would reboot back to the desktop. The third time however, it didn't make it to the desktop. Everything powered on, or at least it seemed so, but the keyboard, mouse, and monitors never came to life and the reboot never completed. I powered down the PSU and took a long look at the components to make sure all was well. I tried rebooting again and the same thing occurred; never completing the reboot and those same components never coming to life. I decided to sleep on it and give it another go in the morning.

Enter the next morning and the same thing. Stumped I decided to unplug the 24-pin from the MB and plugging it back in. To my surprise it booted into Windows. Sadly, that lasted a good 5 minutes and then it rebooted again while sitting idle. The reboot made it into Windows but it rebooted itself again probably after 2 minutes this time.

It's either the PSU or the MB, and I've ruled out the PSU since it is running like a champ off of the MB.

Any insight would be greatly appreciated.
