Mobo and old dvd drive, driving me crazy, help!

ok im going to explode, first post guys!

my wife bought me a new mobo (gigabyte z68ap - d3), an i7 and 8 gigs of ram for xmas (woop)

now ive got everyting installed in my new case etc etc, i can get into my previous installation of windows but.....i didnt realise my dvd drive isnt sata, its just a ribbon connector, so i went out to pcworld today and bought one of these adapter things, ide > sata conversion thing

s plugged it in and connected it to one of my sata connectors.

heres the problem, on boot it gets stuck on "detecting ide drives" when boot with it plugged in it will say this and eventually not even pick up my HDD. If i unplug it then windows boots normally

whats the problem?

please help, i need to reinstall windows and NEED my dvdrive (no i dont have a usb stick that isnt helpful to me)

Hi and welcome.

Often the problem in this type of situation is that the port that it is connected to is working in AHCI mode. You really need it to be in IDE mode so this might entail moving the drive to a different port.

Have you got the optical drive configured as master ?

Yopu can always buy a USB pendrive for about £2 so I don't see that is a problem on it's own.

configured as master? the jumpers are on the master setting if that's what you mean.

I didn't mean to permanently use a pendrive instead of your drive! Just an interim measure.  Besides a new SATA drive is only £10 hardly worth messing with the old one.

AHCI or IDE or RAID are all working modes of the port controller and  a set of ports can be configured to use any of them.

Buy a new DVD Drive (£15 upwards..).

We can't really help with the motherboard as it's not gigabyte's problem, but what DM is talking about is in the bios for example:

yeah its in ide mode in bios

one thing i noticed about the ide- sata adapter is  the two sata connectors it sayd HDD -> sata

hdd? using it on a dvdrive, the packet just said ide to sata converter

It might be worth treating yourself to a new DVD drive as MiiCK has suggested.

I wouldn't think it would matter whether it is an optical drive or a magnetic drive as far as the adapter goes. I would think you must have paid almost as much for the adapter as for a new drive anyway (see my previous post)

yes i suppose, just thought it would work to be honest, it is the mobo really because the drive works, even tried another old dvdrive which works, its just cash after bankrupting myself at xmas with the kids. the adapter is working, the led comes on.

i just dont understand why when i have them both plugged in it detects nothing, it wont even detect my hdd. thats wierd for a start.

Hi,

The best thing to do is to buy one when you can as it is likely to be thew better option in the long run. The good news, possibly, is that with the Jan sales are around the corner and you might pick up a bargain either locally or from one of the online stores. So when you do buy one it will be all new kit and you will get more enjoyment from your present.

As I said before you can pick up a DVD drive on EBuyer for £10 ish and that is delivered! I often buy them for new builds.

yeah well theres only one way it goes with the square bit at the top. there is a jumper on the back of the dvd drives, tried it on all 3
