Crossfire help and Cdrom boot help
« on: October 31, 2009, 05:53:31 pm »
I have a Gigabyte MA785GM-US2H and XFX HD 4650 1G video card.  I'm trying to get the crossfire working but no where in the ATI Catalyst Control does it have an option for enabling.  I've installed the drivers for the motherboard and updated the BIOS to F5.  Here are some questions I have.

1.  What are the settings in the BIOS I need enabled?  I followed the manual.
2.  Do I hook my video cable to the motheboard or videocard to display on monitor?
3.  When I put this computer together, I had the viodeocard installed in the slot.  Should I have installed it after installing Vista 64bit?

On another note after updating to BIOS F5, now I can't boot from my CDrom?  Any idea.

Thanks.

Hi there,

The problem might not be with your bios settings but with the added graphics card. I lifted this from the ga-ma785gm-us2h page: * For Windows® XP, please must install AMD Chipset driver version 8.51 or later.
** Please use ATI Hybrid CrossFireX certified VGA card (i.e., ATI Radeon HD 2400, 3400 series).  I'm not sure if the HD 4650 card is compatable.

Just to run through the bios settings for you, make sure that you are editing the advanced bios settings (ctrl+shift) to get these up.

1. Set the Internal Graphics mode to UMA then set your memory buffer size, remember that this will use system memory. (as you haven't got crossfire enabled this should be easy but these settings can't be made if crossfire is enabled in the software).

2. Set surround view to disabled. (Surrend view enables multi monitor set-up)

3. Set init display first to OnChip/VGA.

I would suggest that you connect your monitor cable to the output on your motherboard rather than the graphics card.

Your other issue with booting from CD after updating bios, have you loaded Optimized Defaults? If yes, check your boot order settings in bios.

Remember, when all else fails a cup of tea and a good swear will often help! It won't solve the problem but it will make you feel better.

Have read the page.  I just don't get an option in the catalyst control center to enable crossfire.  I have installed the latest drivers.  If I hook up the video cable to my add in card the on board video is disabled.  If I hook up to my on board video then the control center says my add in is disabled.  Anyone?

Just confirm that you have done the following....

Enter BIOS Setup to set the following items under the Advanced BIOS Features menu:
-
Set Internal Graphics Mode to UMA.
-
Set UMA Frame Buffer Size to 256MB or 512MB.
-
Set Surround View to Disabled.
-
Set Init Display First to OnChipVGA.

Mate bad news for you.   Your card will not work with that motheboard in hybrid crossfire.

Have a read here  http://www.anandtech.com/mb/showdoc.aspx?i=3615

looks like you have to have an older card like the 3650 or some such or no good.

Sorry

Gave up and got a MSI 4870 for video.  As for the cdrom, guess i had to pick atapi DVD for it to work.
