XFX R7970 graphics on GA Z68XP-UD3P motherboard problem

Anyone know of compatibility issues here?

Have just built a new computer with:
GA Z68XP-UD3P motherboard
i5 2500K processor overclocked to 4.1 GHz using Smart6 TwinTurbo setting
Be Quiet Dark Rock Advanced cooler
Windows 7 64 bit OS
CM Storm Enforcer case
OCZ Vertex 3 120GB SSD
1TB WD1002FBYS HDD

Worked fine with the i5 on board graphics while waiting for 7970 graphics card delivery.
BIOS changed to PCIe display as first priority and Use on-board graphics only when PCIe garphics not installed.
Fails to detect XFX R7970 Black graphics card and boots with on board graphics output only.
An HD 5870 graphics card in the same slot is detected and works (uses 2 x 6 pin power rather that 8+6 pin)
The XFX card works in my other computer - i7 960 on GA-X58A-UD3R motherboard.

Just kidding bud!    What power supply are you using?  Are you sure it's strong enough for the 7970, if you are unsure, can you verify this on another system possibly with that card and PSU?  Also, can you verify on another system that the 7970 itself works at all, just to be sure it's not DOA

Are you using the latest BIOS for the board?  If not, please update to the latest as this may correct the issue.  If the latest BIOS listed on Gigabyte's site does not help, try the latest beta as it could contain a fix for the issue, you can get that BIOS here

Also, have you tried booting with the 7970 in the other PCIE slot (x8)?  If not try it and see if that will allow it to boot.

Thanks for your thoughts.
PSU is Antec Truepower 750W - should be more than enough.
Have the latest motherboard BIOS F7e - think it is a beta.
Just uninstalled drivers that came on CD and installed 8.921.2 RC11 from AMD website.
Tried card in PCie x8 - no joy.
Just seems the card is not being detected. On board graphics continue to work.

Swapping PSUs with the card would identify or rule out the PSU (as much of a PITA PSU swapping is).

Please try and find another system you can test the card in, so you are sure it's actually working before you spend anymore time troubleshooting a DOA card.

Lsdmeasap - see my first post - XFX R7970 worked in my other computer even though this only had 430W power supply, though it wasn't stressed.

Rolo42 - an HD5870 worked in place of the XFX R7970 suggesting PSU is OK. Apart from trying the card in my other computer - where it worked, I don't have a spare PSU to test further with.

Had to give up on this XFX Gigabyte combination - to return stuff in 7 day no quibble period. XFX suggested a few things but when they didn't work said contact Gigabyte. Gigabyte haven't responded to my support ticket in 5 days. How bad is that?!

Now going to try Asus motherboard with Asus HD7970 - surely they must be compatible.

Ohh, sorry I missed that!   Hopefully you get a system up and running soon, I know how frustrating stuff like this can get!
