GA-X58A-UD3R RAID 5 Recovery Problem HELP!
« on: February 17, 2012, 05:01:01 pm »
  I have a GA-X58A-UD3R with a large RAID 5 Array.  It is (6) 2TB discs.

One of them failed.   I just got the replacement and put it in.

I went into the Intel Matrix Boot ROM for the RAID and it sees the "non-member" disc but does not give me the option of adding it to the array?

How do I get the Replacement disc in the array and rebuild?

I really don't want to lose 6 TB's of DATA that I thought I had protected with a Parity setup.

With Windows Intel Rrapid Storage Manager you have the possibility to reconstruct the Raid Matrix with the new disk

You have not this option in BIOS OPTION ROM ( CTRL 'I' )

Start Intel Rapid Storage Manager without the new ( good ) disk

Insert the disk and at this time you have a Reconstruct possibility ( possible Automatic )

Pierre

Not tested with RAID 5/ 6  but sure that is correct with my RAID 10 ( with 4 * disks )

For your 6 * disks you have a similar but 5 disks good + 1 bad ( or in recovery mode )

Not sure how you Start Windows >> Start Intel >> and then add the disc??

I don't have the Create option.

Here's some snaps of the Intel GUI.

Two More Snaps:

Here I've Highlighted the Old drive that is still registered, but gone, and the New Drive that is outside of the Array.

I have not your RAID5 config but i think that you can use the recovery after mark the new disk as spare in Windows Intel Manager

If you cannot repair only solution is to backup all datas and reinstall RAID

Pierre

You have this problem ?

Uninstall Intel Manager and use old version not Rapid Storage but Matrix Storage Manager , if i remember use a good options with version 7.5 in Advanced Mode

Well, with 6 TBs of DATA, I thought parity would be my Backup.  I need a dedicated RAID controller obviously.

Those links you provided describe the issue perfectly, and I am obviously not alone in my Trusting the Intel controller.  That was a mistake.  I've had degraded mirrors with this same type of controller and it wasn't an issue to rebuild.  Of course I was having frequent degradations and it was eventually tracked down to the Intel Software causing the degradation's.  So these POS controllers have bit me twice out of using them twice.

Thanc for the help, will never use these for RAID again.  I also never liked the new Matrix SW, so I may try the older SW as well.

For me i have no problems but only in RAID 10 with 4 * disks 1TO and a long time > 5 years

Possible problem is because you use very large Raid , i have never used with 2TO disks and RAID > 2TO

I have sometimes a defect RAID but that is because i shutdown my computer ' has the wild ' but after recoconstruct is fine , absolutly no problem

In RST, select the new disk and click "Mark as spare" (it is shown on the 2nd screenshot) and it should rebuild.

Did you remove the faulty drive after marking the good one?

The drive was rma'd and returned to the same port it came out of.
