What all disks do you have, and what ports are the connected to (Please tell us color and #)

To change from IDE to AHCI or RAID after you've already installed windows you need to make the following changes

Enable switching between all IDE/AHCI/RAID modes by changing "Start" Values in these keys to 0 (Win 7 / Vista ONLY)

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\CurrentControlSet\Services\Msahci\Start
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\CurrentControlSet\Services\Pciide\Start
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\services\iaStorV\Start

:) Hi thanks foryour reply. It seems I have wasted your time.  I removed all four devices and tried them in another machine the dvd is faulty (although it is brand new) the hard drive worked so I then changed the sata cable (also brand new) and everything is fine. Sorry again to have wasted your time.

Hi and welcome anyway.

Well at least you have found the problem and sorted it out. If only they were all so straightforward as this one.  It just goes to show though that you shouldn't assume that something is working alright just because it is brand new.
