What Gigabyte board as a replacement?
« on: February 29, 2012, 09:50:16 pm »
First of all this site looks quite good as im new to this!

Every PC i have had up to now has been gigabyte hardware in them but on this instance I would like to replace a A8M2N-LA (NodusM3) motherboard from an Hp Compaq Presario SR2019uk pc with a Gigabyte mobo.

Im sorry if im being a pain here as this topic is not really to do with this bit I want to try and get a good match against the old board, the old boards mobo (A8M2n-LA) is not posting ive tried everything to get it to post but nothing, although I like the gigabyte boards.

Could any1 reccommend a mobo that will match this other mobo that is not to expensive as we only use for internet use really, so basically I want to transfer HD, CPU, PSU and that to new board.

Again sorry for the hassle here guys!!! ::)

Information on old board type: http://h10010.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/document?docname=c00757531&cc=us&dlc=en&lc=en#N369

Isnt any on newegg for sale that are am2 and gigabyte. Not any on directron either.  AM2 sockett isnt really that old but in a way it is they have since come out with the AM2+ then the AM3 series and now it is the AM3+ series and that doesnt include the FM1 sockett for the amd cpu/gpu processors.

Maybe go to the am3+ boards as i cant see any AM3 boards for sale by gigabyte either.

Thats 90. Then you are looking at 109. for a processor and you will need new ram DDram3 and since all new boards dont have ide connectors anymore you will have to buy a sata dvd drive at 20.

Look at the bright side there is always ebay though i dont shop there anymore and maybe if you search hard enough you can find a used am2 board by gigabyte somewhere.

couldnt find any in the uk need absic or dark or runner for that. They should be on soon.

It would fit the bill as long as it works.

first off, are you absolutely positive the motherboard if bad?

If so, then any AM2, AM2+, or AM3 that supports DDR2 should work(double check manufacturer site before buying).  DDR3 is not supported by an AM2 processor.

thanks for the info there mark!

I ve tested mostly everything on this board like

Removed the hard drive and tried it in my pc, spins fine and brings data up.
Tried other ram, started at first but few hours later it would not post.
Unplugged everything and just left processor in and motherboard does not bleep to say there is no ram in?
powersupply seems good as it powers up the green light.

Read other problems with this board and alot of people say that the board goes faulty after some time?

What error message do you get with everything connected?

Have you tried clearing the CMOS?  The motherboard firmware can lock up sometimes and it just needs resetting.

do the power or hard drive LEDs light up on computer case?

does the hard drive sound like it is booting up at all?

any sound from your speakers like windows sounds?

did you try only one stick of ram in each of the 4 memory slots to see if it boots?  do the same with the other stick.

can you try your cpu in another computer to see if it will boot with it?

Can you try another psu in this computer to test the motherboard?  you will need thermal paste for the cpu when doing this step.

Not sure what other test you could try, but if CPU, PSU. and RAM work in another system, it sounds like the motherboard, otherwise if you can't test these, then cross your fingers when you buy the new board.

Righ mark, ive been through what you posted

First off, I bought new ram (2 x 1GB) and tried that and it booted up fine for one day, next day back to the same position.

Everything connected, its does not post.
Cleared the CMOS and still does not post.
The powerlight comes on but hard drive light does not.
No sounds from speakers on startup.
Tried different kinds of ram in each slot and still nothing.
Cant try cpu in another pc as its different to this one.
Tried other psu and still does same thing.

Like i mentioned before, I unplugged everything from motherboard apart from the psu and it gives no error bleeps on startup, they usually bleep to say that ram is not present ?  ::)

Hi

Just a warning before you purchase your new motherboard to replace your broken one. Compaq, Dell and several other of the big name companies often use specially designed motherboards that will fit their cases. Often a standard ATX board wont fit in their case so double check first before buying othjerwise you will also need a new case to build it in.

Thanks for the advise there Mr Mantis!!!

How can I check tho if there cases are different than the board? could I possibly measure the opening size or will it say somewhere on here that it will or not?

If you kmnow someone who is fairly computer knowledgeable they will be able to tell just by looking. It's not easy to be able to tell you because some of the changes are only minor. You could always take it to a local computer store and get them to tell you.  I have done some digging around and from what I can see it is a standard Micro ATX format board so you should be alright.

many thanks for that!

I actually printed two versions off, 1 of the old board and 1 of the new and compared them, they do look very simular though? ::)
