Hi
I just installed a 960T b.e in my  GA-M68MT-S2 (rev. 3.1) fb bios. Was about to unlock the cores only to discover in another forum that I could burn out the board,is this true? Why would Gigabyte put the core unlock option in the bios with this cpu, knowing it will burn out the motherboard? Thanks.

Unlocking cores can burn out a CPU or MB. It is added to gigabyte motherboards as a choice. I have known many that unlocked them and didnt harm either one. Normally if you unlock a core and it doesnt work it wont burn out anything as a failsafe it just wont start. BSOD.
Some have unlocked cores and had to turn the processor down to get them to run. If you wanted more cores the best thing to do is to buy one instead of taking chances of burning things out.

It is after all your choice and your money. I call it personal responsibility.

Thanks,I am being responsible, therefore I'm asking a pertinent question.I assumed the m/b was capable of supporting this cpu, which it is,to a point.I knew this m/b supported some 95w thubans and some 95w fx cpus'
As I haven't heard great things about the existing fx chips, I thought a 960t would be a good step up.Knowing it can support 6 core thubans cpu I thought it was compatible with the m/b if the extra cores were unlocked. It should be stated that although this m/b is capable of unlocking cores it will burnout the m/b if a 960T has the extra cores unlocked They provide you the tool, but don't tell you because of the way the boards designed it will burn it out because it supasses the supported TDP.
I didn't buy the chip to unlock or overclock, but it was a nice bonus, glad i asked some questions at another forum otherwise the motherboard would have burned out and I would have had no idea why.I thought I'd find another user here who had a work around.
The supported cpu list should state 960t supported with 4 cores only,as unlocking extra cores WILL burn out the motherboard.
I don;t think it would be too hard to state which cpus can be "safely" unlocked, such as AthlonII  unlocked,as it will not surpass the TDP threshold.
Thats my opinion, and I think its not too much too expect.

Thanks for your advice anyhow ,who are the  many users youknow  that have sucessfully unlocked or o/c'd their 960t on this m/b???I'd like to get more info and their settings as guide. Thanks again.

I am sure they will reply. I know for a fact brandon unlocked one but he doesnt overclock at all so all he did was leave it stocked but unlocked and that has been at least 6 weeks ago i believe. Each processor is different but in thought it would more than likely hurt the chip before the motherboard.

Well heres hoping they reply, like to know how long the m/b would last,I'm not worried about the cpu.On another note, how would one interpret this reply from Gigabyte? (not sure if I phrased the question right)

Answer :  Dear Customer,

It will not burn your motherboard. However, any overclock may short the lifespan of components.

The TDP of the Chipset is 95C.

Thank you for choosing Gigabyte products

What it means is the cut off of the motherboard is 95c where your processor cut off is more than likely only 60c - 65c as it is a amd. So they are assuring you that the motherboard can take it and wont burn out. But they can not garantee that the cpu wont.
