BIOS Checksum Issue - Z68XP-UD3 ISSD
« on: April 19, 2012, 09:24:55 pm »
Hello everyone,

I have some weird issues happening with my MB, suddenly i turned on my PC and i find it's not loading normally, then it gives this error;
BIOS Checksum Error: recovering main bios from HPA, HPA is not available, failed... recovering from backup bios, done. and still nothing is happening. Keep in mind i didn't update the bios or even mess with the settings at all.

PC Details

Motherboard: Z68xp-UD3 ISSD
Processor: Core I3 -2100
RAM: G-Skill 2G 1333 - 8GB (4x2)
VGA: ASUS GTX560 Ti
Power Supply: SeaSonic j-750
Case: Cooler Master - Advanced 912 HAF
HDD: I have 2

Note: I have read this thread http://forum.giga-byte.co.uk/index.php/topic,8588.0.html , did every single thing you supported him with and still nothing has changed. It's been only 2 months since i bought this MB, even gave it back to the Warranty, all what they have done is re-charging the bios again, i took it, plugin and same error is there like they did nothing!

If you have any specific details you want to know please ask, i'm dealing with this issue for almost 3 weeks and i kinda lost hope of getting it fixed.

Hi and welcome.

OK, I am sure we can fix it but it might mean going over things that you have already tried but please just stick with it and do exactly as I ask. This is important and don't think that just because you have already tried something that you will ignore it this time.

Firstly was there any reason that you can think of as to why this happened like thunderstorm, electricity supply failure, etc ?

Buy a new CR2032 battery for the motherboard. Get a decent make not cheap and cheerful.

Interesting. I'll be watching this thread as I have the same issue on a different model of board, yet to be resolved and yet to be sent away for warranty.

Hello Dark,

- About the reason why i think this happened, a week ago before this all happen, the electricity went down while i was gaming for about 2 minutes, started the PC after and worked normally, then suddenly i tried to turn the PC on after a week and that's what i always get, the checksum error.

- I have already bought a new CR2032 2 weeks ago, a decent one and still nothing.

- Important Note: Like i mentioned before, I gave it to the Warranty, they updated the Bios with a different version and gave it back to me, I plugged it in, turn the PC on, it works fine for about 2-3 hours, then i have a new windows update, finished downloading, asked me to restart to confirm the updates etc... i did restart and the same problem shows up once again!

Q1)- Do you think the windows updater has anything to do with that?
Q2)- I have the touch Bios software installed, do you think this software can update the Bios version without warnning?
if so...
Q3)- Do you think after updating the Bios by the Warranty for the 2nd time it's better i uninstall this software so it doesn't mess with the bios version ever again?

So there was a reason for this happening in the first place then. It could have caused some hardware damage or just corrupted some of the software that was running at the time.

We will try a few different things. Please just do exactly as I say and we should get there in the end.

Remove the power cable from the mains supply and then press the power switch on the case for a few seconds just to drain any residual energy in the PSU capacitors.

Once done remove the motherboard battery overnight before replacing it.

Next plug back into the mains supply and boot.

You will now need to enter the BIOS by pressing DEL and load Optimised BIOS Defaults.

Make any other changes to the BIOS settings to suit your self like disabling the floppy drive, disabling the full screen logo and making the HDD the primary boot device and then press F10 to save and exit.

Please post back with the results.

If this was the reason, how come it worked fine for about a week then suddenly this happened?

Anyway, I've done what you asked just as you said step by step and still nothing new.

Sorry, really busy at the moment.

Try this next then. We will copy the Backup BIOS over the Main BIOS in case the boot one is corrupt. It may take a few tries as it is down to timing.

You can kick in the backup BIOS by shutting down the PSU from the wall, then hold down your case power button in and then turn on the power supply button, a few seconds later the board will start, shut off the power supply then.   Then you can turn on the power supply again and power up the board normally and DualBIOS will kick in.

Also tried that step by step, just like how you said it...
after 7 tries it gives the same error like nothing happened.

Foreshadowing,

I am curious... have you been able to restore your main bios from the backup bios with the last desribed power button method?

Thanks

No I haven't  been able to restore it, it still gives the same checksum error. so at the moment I'm waiting Dark Mantis to tell me the next step to try with.
